OSLO | Norwegian police said Sunday they are investigating the disappearance of an associate of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, Arjen Kamphuis, an expert in cyber security, last seen in northern Norway in August.

"We opened an investigation," police spokesman Tommy Bech told AFP, adding that he had no idea where this Dutch citizen might be.

The police "refuse to speculate on what could have happened to him," he said.

WikiLeaks reported Saturday on Twitter the "strange disappearance" of Mr. Kamphuis, stating that he was last seen on August 20 leaving his hotel in Bodo, northern Norway.

According to WikiLeaks, Mr Kamphuis had a ticket for a flight on August 22 from Trondheim, more than 700 kilometers south of Bodo. "The train ride between the two lasts about 10 hours," said WikiLeaks, encouraging the emergence of multiple conspiracy theories on Twitter.

Mr. Assange, a 47-year-old Australian, has been a refugee since 2012 in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London to escape the American justice who wants to judge him for the publication by WikliLeaks in 2010 of military documents and American diplomatic cables.
