Whisky and cigar lovers, do not despair, for variety truly is the spice of life. Anyway, here is my first attempt at diversification.
ICE DRIP COLD BREWING
For those of you who love coffee and have an open mind about non traditional brewing methods, let me introduce you to cold brew. This is one of several ways to make cold brew and I will show others in later posts, but for now, I will say that the whole process for me still has an element of fun and watching water drip is meditative for the first few minutes. I try to use as large a piece of ice as I can find or make, so that the ice melts slower. The coffee is medium to coarse ground and I bought the whole contraption on shoppee for 811 Thai baht, imported from China (took 15 days to arrive after ordering). Its very fragile, I've already cracked the bottom collection container and have ordered another one, but luckily the feeder and brewing portions are still operative. Fill the middle brewing section with a paper filter and coffee, fill the top feeder section with ice and add water, then let drip. You can control the drip speed which is part of the fun. For about 750ml or 24oz of coffee, depending on room temperature, took me about 6 hours. I like to put the whole thing in the fridge once the ice has almost completely melted.
SHOO WE DOO WA'S ETHIOPIAN YIRGACHEFFE COFFEE
Shoo We Doo Wa is a local Thai company that imports and roasts beans. They have several selections but this is my absolute favorite. The coffee is mild to medium roast and it shows in the color of the beans. My experience so far is that milder roasted coffee beans give much more fruity flavours than darker roasted beans. Anyway, Shoo We Doo Wa have a FB page and you can order from them through FB messenger.
The aroma of the beans straight out of the bag is so smooth, nutty and chocolately that it evokes a Pavlovic reaction (is Pavlovic a real word? If not, let's see if we can get enough people to adapt it into the English or American vernacular 😝).
The cold brewed coffee has a very light fruity, almost sour, aroma, not at all like the experience of smelling the unground beans. The taste is velvety sweet and fruity, almost citrus, but first impression is that its hardly like coffee at all, as if its like juice intially, and then the coffee flavours come streaming out, sweet nutty and still fruity with a long length.
NITRO CREAMER
I put about 2/3rds of the brew (around 400ml) into the creamer and charged it up with nitro. Shake shake shake, shake shake shake, shake your creamer! The resultant coffee comes out like a soda or bubbly beer, an interesting experience in itself. The taste of the nitroed coffee, while it's still foaming, tastes quite different to the original cold brew. The foam smells strongly of the fruitiness of the coffee but the taste is nothing but yummy sveltness. The foam dissipates quite quickly and I noticed that immediately after it has gone, the coffee still tastes different than the original cold brew. However after more than 5 minutes the taste is quite similar to the original.
I've had too much coffee for one day but a wonderful experience. Will definitely do this again, not just because I bought 10 nitro cartridges.....
