Sometimes it can be encouraging to realize that your thoughts aren’t original.

The less original the thought, the more people can relate to it. The more people will nod their heads in recognition, maybe smiling as they do.

It’s better if you can add your own take to that unoriginal thought, your own spin, your own riff. And even that won’t be original, but chances are good that people will be encountering it for the first time regardless. They’ll be more likely to smile as they nod. They might even laugh.

Perhaps they can help you to better understand your own thought. But even if not, that’s okay because you’re doing that work already.

You’re the one processing the thought, walking it around in the open to see what it does. You may allow others to witness that process, or you may not. It’s up to you.

But whichever you choose, recognizing how very unoriginal, how human, how near-universal that thought is, can make you feel less lonely in thinking it. That in itself makes it easier to understand.
