The use of precious metals as currency when gold bullion of a certain weight was used in ancient Egypt.
But the discovery of true currency is thought to date back to the 7th century BC when, according to Herodotus, the Lydians were the first to use gold and silver coins.
Despite Herodotus' emphasis on these two precious metals, the first Lydian coins were actually made of electrum,a naturally occurring alloy of silver and gold. Over time, the coins created by the Lydians were later added with a lion's fist stamp to make it more authentic as a medium of exchange. In addition to marking authenticity, the stamp also serves to flatten the shape of the coin so that it weighs the same and there is no need to use a scale if you want to determine the level of purity of the coin.
