“From ‘Producer’ to Producer”: College Part 2

Traditional college is always preferred over online or trade schools.

Traditional is preferred because most credits are transferrable if the school is accredited.

The in person learning experience taught by an expert in their field is a unique experience that can’t be replicated online.

Also being surrounded by smart, talented peers and future scholars will allow one to constantly challenge the ways they think and speak as they are exposed to other values and norms.

Learning to think critically is something that is developed through public speaking and having opinions challenged live and in an open setting.

Learning to defend your position through academic thought and being able to push back on others misconceptions is something a great university can provide.

Going to college is a privilege that many can not afford to do. Learning to spend that time to actually immerse yourself will give you the ability to learn to speak a different language or any other type of skill people think is impossible to do.

If someone else learned to do it before you, you can learn to do it to, but every one doesn’t have the same talent. Your talent is the thing that comes most naturally to you that you are good at.

You should go to school to develop your talent, but also pick up new skills in the process. College is the time to build a network and to create life long memories.

You will learn forever, but college done right will give you the time to create the business and brand you want to build, with a team of people that you like, that will be financially able to generate income after graduation if the four years was spent working.

Only be afraid of getting into debt if you don’t plan on finishing the degree as the most expensive degree is the one you don’t finish. Once you transition from learning to making money with your time, the increased value of your work output will make you the money back.

Going to school does not make you successful, but it takes a successful person to make it through school. It doesn’t matter if you start if you don’t finish.

School takes money, time and talent. It takes money to get through college, time to attend class, study and take the exams and talent to retain the knowledge and apply it.

If you can be successful in college and do well, turning those same skills, focus and time into making money will be simple for you...once you have a quality product, without a good product (even if it is yourself) no one will buy it.

When in college do work study for at least 20 hours. This will give you income, work experience and an ability to apply for nutritional assistance to help you eat while in college. Without work study you can not apply for nutritional assistance; however, your school may have a nutritional program.

You are who you surround yourself with. You are the average of the five things you spend the most time on.

If you want a different life, you must surround yourself with people that do what you want to do better than you.

If you surround yourself with one person that loves what you do and four that hate what you do, the negativity of the four that hate what you do will weigh on you.

Surround yourself with people that you admire or that work as hard as you do. These people will hold you accountable for your actions. People that support your bad habits are not helping you, they are allowing you to waste your time.

Do not waste your time on things that you are not willing to die for, but enjoy life in moderation. If you are not willing to die for alcohol drink responsibly, not only for yourself but for others. If you are willing to die for your kids, spend time with them.

How you do one thing is how you will eventually do everything. It makes little sense now, but as you get older and realize you don’t have time to waste you will make the most of your time and only spend it on things that matter.

Do internships. Volunteer, but don’t let people use you. It is okay to not get paid as long as you are receiving something of value out of the equation, sometimes money can get in the way of developing opportunities.

Work with the right people, and always continually evaluate if you are wasting your time/money. Working with the wrong people will make your life more difficult and cause more problems than doing right for yourself and your goals.

Finding the right people is hard to do, value the ones you find that can do what they say they can do. While mistakes happen, actions speak louder than words over time.

Time tells you the truth about a person. It is easy to talk, harder to do, and life changing to succeed.

If someone has time to talk about you, it means they aren’t working hard enough on themselves to become the best they can be.

People will see a change in you before you see a change in yourself, trust the work. If you do the work eventually you will be recognized.

It takes time, money and talent to be successful at anything whether a company/individual is for-profit or not.

Working for yourself is harder than working for an established brand, no one knows who you are and setting your rates at the beginning is difficult.

Always reinvent yourself, another great reason to go to college. The more that you can do, the better project manager and leader you will be.

Connecting to a university will provide resources and an outlet for individuals to learn and ask questions about topics that their families and friends back home might not discuss.
