There are approximately 120 different species of Goldenrods and most of them are native to the U.S. You can find these invasive weeds in fields, pastures and along roadsides. They can grow up to six feet high and the yellow flowers bloom from late summer until first frost. You will find many bees, wasps and butterflies feeding on the nectar of goldenrods.
According to softschools.com., there is an interesting fact that Thomas Edison made tires for the Model T Ford "by using the rubber extracted from the leaves of goldenrods." In the past, the flowers were used for dye and Native Americans used the leaves to relieve the pain from tooth aches by chewing the leaves of this weed. They used the root to relive a sore throat, and the root was also used in a tea to help with fatigue.
Many people with allergies suffer more when goldenrods bloom and this weed is always to blame. However, rag weed grows at the same time and it is the rag weed that causes the allergies to be heightened; not the goldenrods.
