Color Challenge: Tuesday orange

To me the eye shape in these rocks looks reptilan and the shape of the rock is like a dragon's head.

My house is built on one of the many ridges around Johannesburg that were formed by the Vredefort Catastrophe, one of the largest and oldest known meteorite strikes on earth. These quartzite rocks are around 3 billion years old and are the shattered remnants of the earth's crust that was upturned from the shock of the impact. The meteorite that struck the earth is thought to have been about 10-15km in diameter and if there had been life on earth at the time, it would have caused a mass extinction. The orange colour of the quartzite is caused by Iron oxides.

The orange flowers are Lantana Camara, in invasive weed that is very difficult to eradicate. Lantana is considered one of the top 10 worst weeds in the world because it engages in chemical warfare against other plants, secreting hormones that suppress the growth of other plants so that it takes over areas of land completely. I haven't had much joy getting rid of it because it is impossible to dig out between the rocks, so I will have to resort to herbicides, much as I dislike using them.

Ooh, I'd never heard of the Vredefort Catastrophe before this, I'm going to need to check it out! Thanks for using the geology tag, by the way, I've been trying to help it grow.

I haven't seen the dome from the impact site but I live on the ridges formed at the very outer edge of the impact. I'll post more pictures
