Colorchallange - Sunday Purple

Once prevalent all along the coast regions of British Columbia Purple Sea stars, as well as many other sea star species thrived however due to a relatively unknown bacteria and slight increase in water temperature the sea stars began to die off.

Purple Sea star-1.jpg

The mass die off was not only shocking to the science community but the divers and beachcombers that were accustomed to see hundreds of sea stars both in the water and along the shorelines. Dubbed Sea Star Wasting syndrome, the infected sea stars would literally waste away turning into a puddle of goo.

Of the last 6-8 month the sea stars are starting to return, no where near the numbers that once where but slowly they are being seen once again by people.

It was unmanageable that you wouldn't see hundreds on a dive and now your lucky to see just one. It's quite an impact when something like a sea star disappears.

Thanks for reading.

Amazing nature photography!

That would indeed be shocking. I have never seen a purple sea star, and am happy to hear that they are starting to come back.

You know something similar happened to me? In my country existed a place where you could find a lot of sea star, I came back this year and barely saw a pair of them. I felt sorry, in many ways humans are responsible for these.

Now talking about your photo, as always, excellent shot.

Amazing picture, what motivated you to write about seastars?

Hi @scottdphoto.
Great job, it is a really nice pic.
Only a think, you can use "text-justify" for your posts, eg:

Greetings! :D

Wow @scottdphoto great photo. That sea star has a beautiful purple color and the water seems amazingly clear. At first i thought that was a pile of dead sea snails or something. Freaked me out man lol.

I've seen these in the Vancouver Aquarium....not in the water unfortunately. They are quite beautiful.

With the clean up of the waters and the return of the whales and sea lions hopefully everything else will come back to where it's supposed to be.

Beautiful photo! The colors are incredible! Thank you so much for sharing!

How sad it is to think that we have a very beautiful Ocean yet we destroy and exploit it. Same goes to our terrestial resources. Awesome photo by the way.

What a shame, after learning about the sea stars. I'm from BC and I never knew we have such amazing sea life. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful photo.

Amazing colorful shot
