Where he eats and drinks from, is it plastic or metal? Try switching if either (metal for plastic or plastic for metal). Some cats can develop allergies to either, not usually both.

Thanks! His food bowl is actually ceramic and they have a water fountain to drink from which we clean regularly. I've wondered if he's picking it up from his other houses as we know he likes to visit the neighbours and have second dinners!

Acne is uncommon but not unheard of. It might be hard but do your best to keep him inside for one or two weeks just in case he's picking it up from the outside, might just be an allergic reaction to something/someone he's rubbing against or even food.
