Marvel's True Believers Series is a great way to catch up on some old stories for only $1 per issue. However, sometimes there is a gap in the storyline. This is the case with True Believers #1 Annihilation: The Super-Adaptoid. Originally published in 1959 as Tales of Suspense #82 and #84 (notice that #83 is missing), these stories were brilliantly written by Stan Lee (we're not worthy). To wax nostalgiac even more, Jack Kirby handled the pencil work, while Frank Giacoia inked the issue. These were the days when a comic book could be purchased for 12 cents! Part One had a title of "The Maddening Mystery of the Inconceivable Adaptoid," while the second half was called "The Super-Adaptoid."
We see Captain America at the Stark mansion, which Iron Man allowed the Avengers to use as their headquarters. Looking through a photo album, Captain America is reminiscing about the battles he fought side-by-side with Bucky. He begins to come face-to-face with long deceased foes that included Agent Axis and Fang, The Warlord. Then, he is running from Nazis, with Bucky at his side. When Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch come to his aid, the "Living Legend of World War II" knew something wasn't right. Meanwhile, Shield was investigating a collapsed cave where A.I.M. had their headquarters and had found a lone survivor, Count Bornag Royale.
When Captain America begins to regain his senses he realizes that it was Jarvis who came to his aid, but was it really Jarvis? Royale had explained to the Agents of Shield that the Adaptoid is loose. This creation was really pretending to be Jarvis. This charade allowed him to trace the lifeform of Captain America, with the idea of masquerading as the superhero.
Part II picks up with Captain America bringing the Avengers to the mansion to study the Adaptoid that was created right here on Earth. This backfires as the Adaptoid secretly scans all four Avengers and now harnesses their powers. The creation waits until the other Avengers move on to other business and then begins to battle with Captain America. How can America's favorite soldier fight an enemy that possesses his power, as well as the powers of Goliath, Hawkeye and Wasp? As this issue ends, the Captain can only save himself!
