DC vs. Marvel: War of Worlds

Let the battle begin.

Since the beginning of time, well, the beginning of comics, a question has arised -- DC or Marvel? Contemplate your answer for a moment. Silence ensues.The most furious of fanboys will jump ship to attack if the wrong answer is given.

I’ve decided to step back for a moment. I won’t take sides, just assess. ( I may be a DC dick-rider, don’t quote me on that.)I’m also a comic creator.I can be impartial.

Marvel has been a power-house in the film industry for a good reason. They’re backed by Disney. Who else can afford good writers and feature Kendrick Lamar on a soundtrack? I expect their movies to be better than DCs, but a good friend of mine @ancapbarbie pointed something out to me.

"The difference between Marvel and DC is that Marvel has people trying to be gods, and DC has gods trying to be human.” This has led to Marvel being in the mainstream. Everyone can relate to the underdog. Inside, we’re all Peter Parker. The world is against us. DC, in comparison, is less relatable. However,I could argue that DC appeals to the superhuman fantasy that lurks behind all imaginative minds.

Inside, don’t we all wish to be gods capable of superhuman strength?

Don’t we all wish we were the ones in charge? Batman is the fantasy of the bullied kid in middle school, that just wants justice for being mistreated. Thing is, Batman usually wins. In reality, we’re still that lonely kid, trying to fight the injustice of the world; just like Peter Parker.

Then why does DC recieve more backlash? My first experience with a DC comic, was the Flashpoint series. In that series alone, I found more depth and originality than I have seen in any Marvel comic. Specifically, the flashpoint series. Flashpoint #1 (DC 2011) was able to reuse an older character, but still bring the same emotional impact in a way I had never seen before. Older characters were different, and new ones were added. It used the old, in an imaginative way.

The next I read was Isis, a comic named after the deity herself. I was mesmerized. I wish I could revisit the series in question,but it seems to has disappeared. Only the older 2007 version remains. There’s also a newer one that was published in 2011, but that’s not the one I’m looking for.

I’m sure it was removed in good taste, considering the current political climate.

Still, have to admit that Batman vs. Superman (DC 2016) was a terrible movie. So is any Captain America movie. Especially Civil War (Marvel 2016), The Winter Soldier (Marvel
2014), and The First Avenger (Marvel 2011)

“But Iden,” you interject. “Those are the only Captain America movies that have been released.”

Exactly.

DCs strengths happen to be comics and original concepts , as seen in the Flashpoint series. Marvels strength is movies with solid screenplays, and marketing. Which is evident in their newly released movie Black Panther.

So, who wins? Marvel or DC?

Authors Note: It’s been fun and frustrating to dig up comics from my childhood. I have to admit I still enjoyed myself. It’s ignited a drive in myself to publish, as well as a bit of insecurity.

(Batman: The Animated Series (DC 1992) and Teen Titans (DC 2003) were great shows, you have to admit.)
