The first commandment and the danger of idolatry: You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:3

The first commandment given by Moses is a warning against the danger of idolatry: "You shall have no other gods before me", Exodus 20:3.
This commandment has a very precise explanation, the people of Israel had escaped from the slavery of a pagan people, the people of ancient Egypt, and the old customs still continued. Idolatry is a form of error that must be avoided, Moses is telling us with this command. Men cannot perceive the truth with the reason and it is then that the precept is necessary.
Moses declares idolatry such a grave sin that it breaks the covenant between God and his people, only God can be worshiped. In the new testament, idolatry will have a new expression, the love of money. Idolaters cannot inherit the Kingdom of God, idolatry is a form of spiritual corruption.
The second commandment given by Moses is an extension of the first, and explains to us how God should not be worshiped: "You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.", Exodus 20:4-6.

God cannot be represented by any sculpture or image, the bible is telling us, God can only be worshiped with the heart of man, worship is a pure spiritual activity.
The book of Deuteronomy expands and complements the exposition of Moses, with a series of curses for those who break the law (Deuteronomy 28:15-64), and a set of blessings for those who faithfully follow the commandments given (Deuteronomy 28:1-12). Idolatry in the bible is the gravest form of misfortune.
