Spring is late this year

Cold weather might be the new normal

Planting season has come and gone in many places around the world. If there is a harvest it's liable to be poor. IF there is a harvest at all.

That's a Bad Thing.

A good thing is Vertical Farming Industrial Scale crops grown Indoors. Not your momma's greenhouse.

I've been reading about it for years but I had been under the impression that it was a 'we're gonna do this real soon now' and then....they never did.

Turns out I was wrong. It's being done.

This is quietly, the best new innovation for humanity, in a long time. Wrote many papers on vert farm theory before so many were in popular use. Never thought they would vary this much! Love to see this stuff ;)

I was surprised to learn that it's actually happening.
I'm encouraged.

Yeah that definitely goes for both of us! I got my own garden and hoping to upgrade it to a hydroponic system soon! Think it'll still be awhile before i go vertical tho! ;)

Most vertical farming, maybe all of it, uses hydroponic growing techniques. We are just now learning that bacteria in the soil is essential to giving plants all the nutrition that are bodies require of of what we eat. It could be very bad for our overall health to rely exclusively on vertically grown fruits and vegetables.

always negative.

It is taught here in public schools so yeah, it tips me off to be suspicious. They even have vertical hydroponic gardens in classrooms.

public schools has public school teachers
public school teachers are taught in public universities.
public universitities have been in thrall to the left wing extremists for decades.
you can't please them people.
if you give em a stack of dollar bills they'll complain cause it's not a stack of tens...
always something.

I agree on the need to be suspicious of what is taught in public schools. However, beneficial bacteria are found everywhere. If we take some precautions with the hydroponic solutions, they are not necessarily harmful.

The roots are not constantly soaked in water, and there are many types of bacteria on the roots, probably some of the same ones found in soil. This can be confirmed by taking samples and examining them under a microscope or by growing colonies on a petri dish.

We can also make empirical (non-laboratory) judgements: are the plants growing vigorously or do they lack vitality? Do the colors look OK? Do they bloom? Do the flowers look normal?

We can feed two types of veggies to mice or chickens: do they avoid the hydro veggies and prefer the "regular" veggies? Do they seem healthy? We can do our own taste test: how are the flavors?

BTW, if you don't grow your own, how can you be sure that the veggies you usually buy in the supermarket are indeed non-hydroponic ones?

why can't that wonderful bacteria stuff be applied to the hydroponic substrate...AQUA ponics for example.

Maybe instead of vitalized water they use nutrient dense mud. Again no upvotes are registering. Would a smile be okay : )

Good points all, but the hurdle for today's efforts are to get the industry to even recognize the importance of bacteria and their contribution to nutrition. Taste, I think, is the best way to determine nutrition. Like the difference between tomatoes from the store and your garden. However, younger people don't know what they don't know. If you have never tasted a homegrown tomato you just don't know what you are missing.

I hope this is not read by the communist-socialists we have in Venezuela, because they would once again take out a flag that they waved years ago and did not reach anything ... Now that nothing is produced in the country and everything is imported, it is probably the great idea that they will return to propose but without investing a coin ... In any case, in our country, the situation forces us to have crops in our yards and gardens (tomato, cilantro, pimentos, plàtanao, grains ... ), is a necessity and reality for us. In buildings, I have not seen it yet, but it's probably a matter of little time.

Beautiful gardening........!

This farming is really on next level....

This is wow

Are these pictures Photoshop or do they really exist, hmm if they are true then am amazed.

Yes sir they are absolutely real

Two or three years ago, I remember listening to a fascinating interview on a French science program with Patrick Blanc, a botanist who was inspired by the trellises used to support grape vines on his family vineyard.

About fifteen years ago, he invented the mur végétal, a sort of “plant wall” that is now called a “vertical garden.” These have probably provided most of the inspiration for vertical farming.
