I mentioned before that I was negotiating with a client. While I do not blame him for all that has unfolded (anyone keeping tally of the shitstorm that's been my life as of late?), it's clear that he doesn't value people for the value they offer – only the tasks they complete. This has been the bane of my existence, for nearly three years (and I take responsibility for the part I played in that).
Knowing everything he knows about me, I don't know how he could possibly think I would be satisfied in such a role. I'm an entrepreneur. I think for myself. I hate being told what to do and not getting recognition for the value I create. I hate not having any opportunity to earn on performance. I could go on about that, but by re-opening the conversation about compensation, I have effectively taken the matter in my own hands. I'm just glad I had the balls to do it again, because the last few conversations on the topic didn't go so well.
The response I got was at least a little surprising. Not in a "holy crap, you finally get me" kind of way, but certainly in a "whoa, I didn't know there was this side to you" kind of way.
I still didn't see any indication that he sees me as anything more than a writer (time will tell, friend... time will tell). I still don't see any indication of remorse for his clear exploitation of creatives. But he showed some sympathy, something I wasn't sure this robot was even capable of. That's a start.
Then he nonchalantly added (as if I should have already known), that he was compensating other writers based on the number of words they promised each week.
Good Lord. If I had known that just a month earlier... Christ (forgive my French). Things could have gone very differently, that's what.
Look, it's still nothing more than a stop gap. I don't see myself clinging to this role forever. But instead of inconsistently earning a couple grand per month, I could be steadily earning a few grand per month with this guy. That's a leap forward if I've ever seen one.
Besides aggressively looking for new opportunities, I will continue to build up my businesses as well, and I have a very different outlook on that than I did before all this began. Like I said before, this is all somehow working out to be best case scenario.
Please don't take this to mean I don't value my clients though. I've had a bit of a history with the guy in question.
