How to be Confident in Everything You Do? 😎 🔥

It is not easy being a shy person. Everyday tasks such as grocery shopping feels like a enormous thing. Whenever you say something to others, your opinion is not taken seriously. You get scared to answer anything in class or in the office. Whenever you are outside in public, the only thing you can think about is running back to home. Trust me, I have been there! But is it something that you are born with or can you actively change your personality?

Neuroplasticity and the Brain

According to Brain Works, we become stronger at the things that we do often and things that we don't tend to fade away. The scientific term to this phenomenon is neuroplasticity which is also the muscle building part of the brain. What it means is that, as we do the same thing more and more, we keep getting better at it as our brains remember what we have done from past experiences. But the brain also forgets things that we don't do often and this is where the problem lies. If the brain can't remember past experiences where we were confident, it can not reinforce that feeling later o in our lives.

What Does This Mean?

It all comes do our choice. If we choose to be shy all the time, then our brain will reinforce that feeling and keep us shy foreer. However, if we choose to do the things which makes us more confident, our brain will remember that feeling of confidence and use it later on when needed. But do we need to do things that makes us feel confident 24/7? No. Of course not! We have to power up and down (just like Steemit). But most importantly, we need to be consistent and proactive!

Building Confidence

Building your confidence is like going to the gym. The first time you go gym, you don't see any results but your body ends up hurting like crazy. Most people end up quitting the week after because the pain and lack of results is not worth their time or money. However, it is very well known that your body takes time to recover from the shock of lifting weights and usually adjusts after roughly two weeks. The people who end up ploughing through this initial pain, will eventually fall in love with the weights and will take an interest in leading an active lifestyle.

But what did this teach us? It taught us the value of consistency and pro-activeness. Sometimes in life you need to do the things that you hate the most to come out stronger and better. This same principle goes towards building confidence.

Majority of the time we are shy because of our body image. We think other people will judge us because of the way we look. We end up hating how we look because someone told us that we are fat. Why not change that by going gym! The moment your posture is right, you are living an active lifestyle and eating healthy, you will start seeing results very quickly. This is the moment when you will realise that what other people say does not matter at all. People will also criticise you because of your sudden change in lifestyle (i.e. going gym), but they say that because they know that they should be doing this themselves but are choosing not to. They don't like change and they don't like you changing!

List of Things to do to Build Your Confidence

✅ Do Something That you Haven't Done Before
Shock your brain. Once it is in shock it will remember that for the next time. Do one new thing everyday, until your brain brings you out of your comfort zone completely.

✅ Do the Thing That You Are Scared to do
Take small steps like talking to a random stranger on the road or the bus. Most likely you will never end up seeing them again, so why not introduce yourself and have a small conversation. You can always start like this, "Hi I am __. How is your day going?".

✅ Practice Public Speaking
Public speaking is perhaps one of the best ways for someone to improve their confidence in a short amount of time. It brings together communication, showmanship and charisma in one platform. There are a lot of organisations like Toastmasters where you can sign up and practice your public speaking in front of a non-judgmental crowd. Public speaking is a very valuable skill to have in life!

✅ Be Consistent
Whether you feel like it or not, you must do it. If you are scared to look directly at someones eye, practice eye contact with a friend first.

✅ Be Proactive
If you feeling like you are slacking, figure out ways how you can keep up yourself motivated. You can assign a friend to check up on you everyday to see if you have done everything on your list for that day. Or reward yourself every time you do something courageous! Whatever it is, don't loos your consistency.

Conclusion

Building your confidence takes time and effort. It requires patience and proactive practice. Through consistent effort anyone can become confident. But on the days you don't feel like being proactive towards your goals, always remember the gym analogy. If Arnold Schwarzenegger gave up going gym after his first week, perhaps we would never have seen living legend that we all have come to adore.
