This is a photo of all the different books that are being used to swear in the incoming members of congress. A beautiful picture of our diversity. Got me thinking about which book would be the most holy for me if I were ever sworn into office (and they wouldn't allow me to pinky promise instead, despite the fact that this is obviously more binding).
While I have been moved by several different books throughout my life, nothing rivals the reverence I felt over happening upon a few torn out pages of a Playboy magazine inside a clump of trees in the field behind my house when I was 10 yrs old.
Kids these days have no clue how hard it was back then. Outside of National Geographic, nudity was impossible to find so this discovery was sacred. I didn't even know what to do. I was too afraid to do anything more than simply look at the crumpled pages from afar, standing over them like they were an uncomfortably warm fire. I imagine this is how the natives of the Americas felt as they watched the Spanish ships floating in for the first time. I'm sure we both thought we were looking upon God herself.
Despite making a pilgrimage to this shrine nearly every day for weeks, I never touched the pages. They were much too sacred and dangerous. Till one day, they disappeared. Taken up to heaven I suppose.
But yeah, if I'm ever elected for president, I will swear over a replica of these pages. Unless God sees it fit to send them back down, of course.
