The conquest of Canaan: The LORD had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua

The Book of Joshua and the Book of Judges tell us how the conquest of the promised land was at the hands of the people of Israel. The Lord through a pact had promised this land to the descendants of the patriarch Abraham, but the conquest of the country of Canaan was not without great difficulties.
Many Canaanite cities were well fortified, and some of the country's people managed to negotiate with the Israelites. Joshua, who was the successor of the prophet Moses, was unable to complete the conquest of the country. The inhabitants of the region managed to resist in several places, although many had to pay tribute.
In addition, the Bible tells us that the Israelites adopted many customs from the peoples they conquered, something prohibited by the Lord: "Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD and served the Baals" Judges 2:11.
The Bible tells us that this fact greatly displeased the Lord, who in response to this sin, decided that many idolatrous peoples would not be expelled from Canaan:
"Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel and said, ´Because this nation has violated the covenant I ordained for their ancestors and has not listened to me, I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died. I will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the LORD and walk in it as their ancestors did.´ The LORD had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua" Judges 2:20-23.
The judges that had been constituted by Moses, unable to establish peace, due to the constant wars of the peoples that were not conquered, finally gave way to the first monarchy with King Saul, and the conquest of Canaan would finally be completed with his successor, the King David, who established Jerusalem as the capital of the Kingdom of Israel.
