Envision an iceberg.
You can easily see the portion that protrudes from the water. You may also see a portion of the iceberg that descends below the surface into black. However, the only way to see how deep the iceberg goes is to dive below the surface and follow closely along the outer portion of the submerged ice. The buoyancy and relative stability of this iceberg depends on the depth of that which descends. The deeper an iceberg descends the more stability the visible portion will have.
The human mind is much like this iceberg analogy. The portion you can easily see(access) is the conscious mind. This is the portion of you that has "awareness" and is limited to what you consciously bring awareness to. The portion of your mind that plunges into the depths is your subconscious mind. This is the portion of you that recorded what you brought your awareness to over your lifetime.
For example, you recorded how you brushed your teeth your whole life, so when you brush your teeth now it is semi-conscious, you don't think about how to do every step because in large part your body is operating off of the recording you've made.
This is how the subconscious mind operates. So if you have recorded negative patterns into it, your conscious mind has no choice but to operate under that recording. Even if you bring your conscious awareness to the negative pattern, your conscious mind is still attached, and somewhat subservient to your subconscious mind.
For example, I eat toast when I'm nervous or anxious. I don't know why but it brings me comfort. If I want to stop eating so many carbs, even if I bring my awareness to this pattern, the recording preempts my conscious awareness of it. When I encounter stress my subconscious plays the recorded pattern and I get the feeling/desire/need to have toast. THEN, it is up to my conscious mind to stop it.
Most of us have a few, or more, negative patterns that drive us to perform 'rituals' that we programmed into our subconscious over our lifetimes. This may be smoking, eating, laughing, crying, ... all that we do(have done) to cope with our individual experiences.
This is why quitting any negative pattern is so difficult, the pattern is recorded into our bodies. In order to free ourselves from the pattern we must record over the pattern; recording a new positive pattern.
Successful stories of "quitting" were narrated by changing a pattern in ones' life. For example, someone who was successful in quitting smoking cigarettes most likely changed the pattern that lead up to the feeling/desire/need for one. If one was a social smoker, removing oneself from the environment that provoked the pattern would be helpful; replacing the pattern with a new recording.
Previously the only way to re-record patterns was to physically do the work, reconditioning, re-recording new patterns one at a time. This way is hit or miss depending on the potency of the person's desire to quit. What stops people from using this method is the time, effort, and commitment required to record new patterns.
There is a new and better way to record patterns, or more aptly, delete old patterns. It is called Kinesiology. Kinesiologists work with the body using methods that access the subconscious mind in realtime. No more having to restructure your life BEFORE change occurs. Kinesiology makes the change in your subconscious and the restructuring of your life, the deletion of negative patterns, occurs before your conscious mind becomes aware of it.
For example, if after a successful kinesiology session, a person attempts to resume their old pattern, something will feel different. In some ways it will feel "new," like trying on an old pair of shoes again for the first time. The old recording is gone and a new one must be recorded. A person then may record a new pattern, or, re-record the old pattern.
Using a previous example, if a person is a social smoker and the pattern was deleted, that person can record the old pattern again by inhabiting the same environment that provoked the negative pattern. However, if the person brings awareness to the old pattern, and chooses to avoid that environment, a new pattern will be recorded and will take precedence, and the person will automatically avoid that environment. This may include avoiding friendships and places that provoked the deleted pattern.
Change MUST occur and this may result in friendships being lost, but, take comfort in that. These "friendships" and places were not serving the highest will and must be left by the wayside as one travels into higher consciousness.
The depth of each individual's subconscious is limited by, and depends on, the capability of one's awareness. If one's conscious awareness is shallow, self-serving, then their ability to know and understand their subconscious -their actions and reactions- is equally shallow. If one is driven by their desire, by the patterns recorded into the body, then accessing the subconscious will not even be within the realm of consideration; they will be consumed with consumption, only taking long enough breath to dive back deep into desire.
As one becomes gradually more aware, more mindful, the connection to the subconscious -that submerged portion of the iceberg that is still visible from above the surface- will become more visible, more attractive, and more necessary to explore. With deep breath, one can dive beneath the surface of one's awareness and map the uncharted waters of the subconscious and their subconscious mind. The interesting effect of becoming more aware of our subconscious is that we become more selfless.
