Consciousness

I think it’s fair to assume we’re all familiar with the Albert Einstein quote: “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” Maybe you didn’t know that Einstein said that, and that’s okay. But it is a quote that floats around, particularly during election years when people are trying to convince you to vote for “the other guy.”

Maybe it’s because we’re coming up on mid-term elections (and I hope you’re planning to vote) that the election connection is on my mind, but I find this line of thinking to ignore (on some level, anyway) the ability of human beings to grow. Indeed, Albert Einstein himself provides proof that people have the ability to grow outside of the boxes they find themselves in.

This ability to learn, and therefore grow, is something that I consider to be a quintessential human quality. While this may not happen in politics very often, there is a very distinct possibility that after a couple of years we may be “the other guy” in any given situation. The way you voted several years ago may not be the way you vote today. Your internal (or external) reaction to someone making a comment about your size may very well be different on your third pregnancy when compared to your first. As a child you may have detested onions on your cheeseburger and today you can’t imagine your burger without them.

Our growth beyond our original programming is what makes us human.
