Isaiah is the prophet of hope, facing the disaster suffered in the exile by the Jewish people in Babylon, Isaiah reminds us that God does not forget his pact with men, and for this reason he arouses the devotion of the prophet so that he recognizes that God's ways they are secret and unfathomable, and that in the face of this, men must humbly recognize that life is short and that in their littleness, men must, first of all, adore God.
The prophet Isaiah teaches us in a metaphorical way that God is perfect and that the perfections of all things correspond to God, to God belongs the perfection of advice and the good intelligence (understanding): "Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge, or showed him the path of understanding?" Isaiah 40:14.
After expressing this divine mystery, the prophet wants to understand better God and asks: "With whom, then, will you compare God? To what image will you liken him?" Isaiah 40:18. This is a reminder that the covenant with the Lord is based on the fulfillment of the first and second commandments: "You shall have no other gods before me," Exodus 20:3.
Then the prophet says with devotion, that men must abandon all pride and surrender their trust in the Lord: "Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing" Isaiah 40:21-23.
