The Second Book of Kings begins by recounting the end of the Reign of Ahab, king of Israel, and how his successor King Ahaziah suffered a serious accident and sent messengers to consult the God of Ekron for his health. And so it was that God sent Elijah to prophesy the death of Ahaziah for his unfaithfulness to the law.
This story between this sinful king and Elijah is a teaching that the sin of idolatry leads men to their ruin and destruction, and the death of Ahaziah was in a certain sense a foretaste of what would later happen to the Kingdom of Israel, in front of the Assyrian invasion; only the spiritual gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity) as taught by Moses and all the prophets after him is a true source of blessing for men.
Elijah's action before the King of Israel is also a teaching that God constantly calls men to conversion, to repentance, but men have the freedom to choose between sin and righteousness. Folly and wisdom are paths against man's reason.
With these words, the Second Book of Kings tells how King Ahaziah sinned, and in response God sent the prophet Elisha:
"After Ahab's death, Moab rebelled against Israel. Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers, saying to them, ´Go and consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, to see if I will recover from this injury.´
But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, ´Go up and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, ´Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?´ Therefore this is what the LORD says; ´You will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!´So Elijah went." 2 Kings 1:1-4.
