Mayo are a football team in Ireland. They havn't won the All-Ireland title since 1951, despite reaching the final 9 times since 1989. Despite having the best team for most of the matches.

Of course Mayo's misfortune is not due to any football shortcomings but instead down to a curse that has been over the team during their entire barren run.

The story of the curse dates back to that last All-Ireland win in 1951.

The Mayo panel were travelling back to the west from Dublin along with the Sam Maguire trophy after beating Meath.

Apparently the team, who were travelling in the back of a truck, passed a funeral in the town of Foxford without paying their respects and stopping.

The curse was then put on them that they would not win an All-Ireland again until every member of that team was dead. It is believed a priest or a woman put the curse on them.

Whether or not you believe that curse is true, they are without an All-Ireland win since.

Only two members of the team are left, so we will see.

Wow, so sad that we still believe such things. I am sure that curse thing would be playing on their mind and especially when they play in final and that may put extra pressure. The moment they win it for once, that superstition will change drastically.

You haven't seen all their matches. There is definitely something strange happening....
The last two players are in their 80's now so mayo will be doing well to win before they go. If that's the case the legend might live on for a long time. All I know is that year I'll be throwing a hundred on mayo to win.

Well, not sure though. Let's hope they win.

Ya, it was funny for a while but at his stage they really do deserve it. So many close matches and heartbreak.

Let's wish them my friend, hope you will have some joyful moments...

Fuckin' typical Ireland. We're way to superstitious for our own good. The hypocrisy of the situation is they put a curse on them for not being good Catholics, yet the act of putting a curse on someone is a pagan exercise.

I know. Some things will never change. Even in modern Ireland there is a lot of the past left.

Dishonorable mention : The entire Healy-Ray clan, Thinking the world is only 6000 years old.

"But they fixed the pot holes at least" Probably the most used excuse for electing just awful politicians in this country
