I have known for quite a while that I might need to let go of one of my writing contracts, even though it's been my bread and butter for a few years.
Now that I'm starting to see just how much I've been hanging on by a thread these last few months, I've been left with no choice but to renegotiate.
I am skeptical that my client will even care about my general well-being. If he cares about losing his best writer, he might return to me with a proposal. But I have a feeling he doesn't care that much. For him, it's mostly about getting what he wants.
At some point, that's only going to come back to haunt him. I don't think I can be the one to convince him of that truth, but at some point, paying just enough to get by is going to put a lid on his upside potential. He'll find himself negotiating with financial impasses because of his unwillingness to compensate people for the value they offer, not the tasks they complete. I'm done with it. Really done with it. I must be compensated as a specialist is, for knowing what to do, not for the amount of time it takes or doesn't take me to do.
Why did I wait until things got so bad? I had to ask myself that same question, and what I've realized is that it's just human nature. We don't change until we're so close to the fire that our skin is starting to boil.
Someone from the outside looking in probably would have said, "No big deal. Cut the cord and you'll probably replace the contract in no time." Unfortunately, it might not have made the difference. It had to hurt more for it to really sink in.
But next time, rest assured, I won't be waiting this long. Once I know there's no wiggle room in the contract, I will back out. It's for my own well-being and the personal cost only mounts with time.
I'm worth so much more than what I'm being paid, and it's been that way for much too long.
