Hi Everyone 🐱
We made pretzels for the first time, they turned out delicious but they didn't look so good. I have a new found respect for anyone who has the patience to roll out the dough and bake perfectly shaped pretzels. We were missing Kosher Salt but added sesame seeds and Himalayan salt instead.
Ingredients
- 1 pack (4tsp) of Active Dry Yeast
- 1/2 cup of Sugar
- 5 cups of All-purpose flour
- Hot Water
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of Salt
- Vegetable/Canola oil
- 1/2 cup of Baking soda
- 1/4 cup of Kosher salt / other toppings
Directions
Dissolve the yeast and 1 teaspoon of Sugar in 1 1/2 cups of warm water. Wait 10 minutes.
In a large bowl, mix 5 cups of flour with 1/2 cup of sugar and a teaspoon of salt. Add 1 tablespoon of oil and the yeast mixture. Form into a dough, you may need to add a little more water. Knead the dough until it's smooth.
Oil a large bowl and put the dough into it, make sure the dough lightly covered in oil and cover the bowl for about an hour.
Dissolve 1/2 cup of baking soda into 4 cups of hot water.
Preheat the over to 450 degrees F (230 C) and grease 2 baking sheets (don't use parchment paper, it was a mistake)
Roll the dough into a thin rope and form into a pretzel shape (the hard part), dip them in the bath of soda water and place them on the tray. Sprinkle salt and other toppings on them.
Bake until browned, or about 7-10 minutes depending on thickness
These pretzels are best eaten fresh and dipped in fancy mustard or a sugary sauce. I hope you enjoy them, they are more savory than your average snack and they can be a filling appetizer.

For the first time I honestly don't think they look too bad. I'm glad you went the healthier way with Himalayan salt instead of salt.

Thanks Jason, Himalayan salt and Canola oils are definetely healthier alternatives. Can't say that about the flour and sugar though

As long as you use the healthier alternative the better. Glad to see the kitty is still nice and safe! I want my dog to pose like that but that's not probible.

Looks good. Maybe I can try to make some with my other half of pizza dough I froze that was a total failure since pretzels are nice when chewy.
