Once you discover how they make it, you'll replace Canola Oil with...steemCreated with Sketch.

Let me tell why I’m no fan of Canola oil.

I will use quotes from several health authorities to make the point.

  1. “Originally, rapeseed oil may not have had so many negative health effects. But for two main reasons, most canola oil today can be very harmful to your body:
-- Over 90 percent of canola oil is genetically modified.
-- Canola oil is a refined oil that’s often partially hydrogenated to increase its stability, but this increases its negative health effects.” [Source: Dr Josh Axe’s Stop Using Canola Oil Immediately! 6 Canola Oil Dangers]

  2. “…untold dangers to your health” [Source: Dr. Mercola’s Canola Oil: When a Great Oil Isn’t So Great After All…]

  3. “In addition to the genetic modification, the process of making Canola oil is troubling. The procedure involves a combination of high-temperature mechanical pressing and solvent extract, usually using hexane. Hexane! Even after considerable refining, traces of the solvent remain. Like most vegetable oils, Canola oil also goes through the process of bleaching, degumming, deodorizing, and caustic refining, at very high temperatures. This process can alter the omega-3 content in the oil, and in certain conditions bring the trans fat level as high as 40 percent.” [Source: NaturalNews.com’s Canola Oil: There is the Good, the Bad and the Ugly]

  4. “Conventional canola oil (which is what most people are consuming) is low in nutrients, high in oxidized omega-6 fats, high in trans fats and the omega-3s happen to be in an inefficient form. Overall, canola oil is not as bad as other vegetable oils (like soybean oil), but it is still far from being healthy. You would do much better eating olive oil or coconut oil instead.” [Source: Healthline.com’s Canola Oil: Good or Bad?]

Yes, I remember when Canola oil was being touted as a great alternative to olive oil. Did you know that Americans often don't know that rapeseed oil is the same as Canola oil.

And did you know where the work canola came from? Many years ago, canola oil marketers were having a big marketing conference in Canada. A lot of rapeseed is grown in southern Alberta. They didn't think that Americans (largest market) would go for a product called 'rapeseed oil.' So they agreed to come up with a new name. They probably batted around a lot of different possibilities, but ended up choosing canola - from the two words 'Canadian oil.'

Yep, and I'll bet a lot of people dont know that. Thanks for sharing those details, Kate.

I use olive oil almost exclusively but also coconut oil from time to time. Oh and bacon fat or butter.

Ya'd think I'd be more healthy, wouldn't you.

These days, more and more is coming out about the health value of coconut oil.

But what I'm also learning is that a few weeks or months of improved eating cant undo years of eating whatever I liked. Good health is a long term process, even then with limitations because of what I've done to my body in the past + genetics, etc.

Okay, guess I need to break down and buy some olive oil. I do have coconut oil but never think to use it!

Or at least start using the coconut oil, Peggy. It adds a nice extra flavor.

I think in most cases it comes down to cash...canola is so cheap. I don’t buy it, I noticed people’s/mine bad digestive reaction. I use peanut- for frying larger things or for just a different tone, butter and olive oil. Got away from corn after learning that when bugs eat the gmo corn their guts bust open....what a way to die just for eating. Can always tell the quality of the restaurant... from managers at restaurant: if you stomach is full after eating a bit of salad, and something else they are cheap. It’s what they want, to give you that “full” feeling. Probably a mix of canola and corn.

You are wise to avoid GMO anything. But it's getting harder these days.
Natural health experts have solid reasons for recommending against GMO.
