Colin Powell died at 84 of COVID. He was fully vaccinated, but apparently had multiple myeloma and Parkinson's. He was planning to receive his third dose booster, but passed away before he could.
Immunocompromised people have been much more likely to be non-responders to the coronavirus vaccines. This is especially true for organ transplant recipients and those with hematologic cancers like multiple myeloma. Third dose boosters help 33-50% of non-responders generate an immune response, but that still leaves many unprotected. Many of the breakthrough hospitalizations have been such individuals.
We get vaccinated not just to protect ourselves, but to protect immunocompromised people like Colin Powell.
