It didn't come directly from bats.

Good reminder with SARSr-COVs, we've seen them travel long distances thanks to the animal trade and bats before. Hubei province specifically had bats and farmed civets that had SARSr-COVs. Hubei isn't a hotspot province like Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan, but it certainly has the capability as it has active animal farms and markets for susceptible animals and bat caves that carry SARSr-COVs.

Host features of SARS-COV-2 point to it unlikely to be the case that it jumped straight from bats to humans. So generally scientists believe if it was a zoonotic spillover it was from an host intermediate animal and not bats. That's why a lot of focus has been on raccoon dogs and similar susceptible animals.
