It now goes to the CDC. The CDC's advisory committee ACIP will meet July 19th to discuss authorizing Novavax, and then the CDC director will sign off.
Unfortunately it was only authorized as a primary series for adults for now, not as a booster. Two shots 3 weeks apart like Pfizer's vaccine. A separate booster authorization will be needed.
This will be the first protein subunit coronavirus vaccine. This is a traditional vaccine platform. The phenomenal HPV vaccine and the Hepatitis B vaccine are protein subunit vaccines. Novavax's vaccine also uses an adjuvant to enhance the immune response. This is a safe and effective vaccine.
Hopefully some people that were vaccine hesitant because of the mRNA vaccines will be motivated to get this vaccine.
I'll be more interested in if it gets booster authorization. With J&J moved to the second-line option, there is a space for a first-line non-mRNA vaccine option for future boosting.
