Corona Virus - Between a Rock And a Hard Place.

My previous post - 'Cometh the Hour - Cometh The Man' was changed when Boris Johnson became ill.

Many, like me' consider him to be in the Churchill mould, and the virus his chance to provide similar inspiring, rousing leadership.

He still could. There are many examples in history of Generals rising from their sickbeds to win wars.

I can't recall Churchill doing that, but it does remind me - He was on the toilet when the Lord Privy Seal called to see him.'Inform him that I am sealed in the privy'said Winston.

Some senior UK MP's,with thoughts in a turmoil by the serious form of the virus afflicting the Prime Minister, and I'm sure,we all, friend and foe, are sending get well prayer vibes winging through the ether to him in Westminster hospital.

Some anxious MP's,will not want to be rocking the boat of a united government, but know that a leadership power vacuum is dangerous, especially with the chief medical advisers saying the lockdown must continue until the end of May.

My informant tells me - some whispering s overheard among concerned MPs testing support - "We cannot destroy jobs of the young to save lives of the old " - "There comes a point when the cure is more harmful than the disease" - "The lockdown strategy intends well, but history shows the pathway to hell is paved with good intent" - "We must decide the lesser of 2 evils."- "Those who the gods would destroy, they first make mad".

Sweden is probably the only country not to adopt a full lockdown policy, but are now seeing infection and death averages rising above nations that have full lockdown.

But they have their businesses, shops, schools and general economy still operating to 75%.

It always was a trade off.A compromise. They can also go to full lockdown if the situation is judged to warrant it.

Of course every effort must be be made to give the best medical care for the sick. But a balance must be struck.

Modern generations, that have known nothing but good times, seem unaware that real money comes from the economy, from trade industry & services.

Today in advanced countries the spending departments of government - Health.Police.Social Services.Defence, etc, far outnumber the earning departments - Trade.Agriculture.Finance.Music & Film, Technology. etc.

It wasn't always so.'The world doesn't owe you a living, earn or starve' was drummed into us regularly growing up

In hard times, the family breadwinner had priority when food was scarce.

In the 1930s,my father who did hard manual farm work stoked up energy for the day with rashers of fat streaky bacon, home salt cured, from our own pig,as most villagers did.

The rest of our family enjoyed the same, until running low, when breakfast for we non-earners became toast & jam or dripping.

I am worried - The next week or two are crucial for saving the economy, I think.

Decision - What is for the greater good?

Boris desperately wants to be Churchill and he is bright, but I don't think he's brave enough to carry it off. He has ducked out of various challenges and his private life does not fit in with Tory family values. I don't wish him ill health, but maybe this has been a reality check for him.

You should move over to Hive as most of us are powering down our Steem and votes will dwindle here. Log into peakd with you Steem key and carry on as normal.

Hi stevec.I haven't been able to join Hive yet. I looked this afternoon but couldn't see where to login with on Peak using my Steem key. I have to download an extension for chrome? I will look tomorrow.A bit weary to concentrate at the moment.

There is a Hive Keychain for Chrome, but does not look like it's in the store yet. There are details here. Otherwise there should be the option to not use Keychain and just use your key. This complexity is an issue for Steem too. Are you noticing less activity on Steem lately? A lot of people I know are just powering down and may leave entirely in a couple of months.

Thank you steevc. Yes,I was puzzled by the reduction & similarity in number of votes for my posts lately - about 11 or 12 consistently. Then Sod's law, yesterday's post - 63 votes - probably my most ever! What is going on?
I must crack the joining Hive puzzle. Heck,I'm called I've around here. Is that not an omen?

I just updated the Hive Keychain. I hope they get it into the extensions store soon. EDIT: Seems the latest version had a bug and I needed to apply a patch to it. You should still be able to log in with your key anyway.

There is some issue with uploading images on Hive today. These things happen and I'm sure it will get fixed soon.

O.k Thank you.I'll give it a day or two before I try again.I have to pace myself because my eyes get tired as I tend to strain if on too long.My new glasses should have been here by now,but delayed because of lockdown.

Hi steevc. I haven't looked at logging into Hive again, but in my Bittrex account holdings I notice I have Hive and showing the same amount as Steem?

You will have the same amount of Hive, Hive Power and HBD for any SBD, as of the time of the hardfork. The data was duplicated, but will have diverged since then. Only those who really supported the Steemit takeover were not entitled to get any Hive.

So you can carry on using both or power down one to boost the other. I am selling my Steem to buy Hive as I feel that is the better option now. It is largely about the people for me.

Hi steevc. I think I will wait another couple of days to let Hive settle down.image problem you mention.I am powering down and then I want to send the Steem I have in Savings to Bittrex, but I have to wait three days.
I've never bothered about understanding the finer points of the voting system. Just write and see what I get has been my limit. My glasses came this morning,so I hope to do more now.

Thank you stevec. I saw Hive mentioned occasionally but thought little of it.It seemed to be a power struggle going on.I will explore later today:Thank you for pointing it out.

This crisis will show one way or another if Boris has the Churchill factor. Not looking positive so far.If not him, whom?
Rishi Sunak is impressive and shows leadership potential.I'm not a Labour man but I am impressed by the responsible attitude of Keir Starmer, although he was a disaster as Director of Public Prosecutions, apparently.I'm thinking if it comes to a Government of National Unity?
