According to the research from Wuhan, the coronavirus can infect the brain, with more than a third of infected patients experiencing neurologic symptoms. In addition to brain infection, Dr. Stephanie Collier, a psychiatry teacher at Harvard Medical School, explains that the pandemic has worsened mental health outcomes due to the psychological toll of isolation, loneliness, unemployment, financial difficulties, and the loss of loved ones. “The prescription of antidepressants has spiked, intimate partner violence has increased, and suicidal thoughts are on the rise, especially in young adults.” All these factors may affect our mood, mind, and mental health.

#3 Signs that you are in a low mood:

You may experience frequent bouts of melancholy, anxiety, or panic. Anger or frustration may also reflect the negative effects of long COVID on your mood. Other signs and symptoms include hopelessness, low self-esteem, and tiredness. People with long COVID may also find themselves being more anxious than usual.

A bad mood normally fades away after a few days or weeks. But on the other hand, if you experience it constantly, it may be a sign of depression.

#4 Recognizing long COVID depression:

It could be an indication of depression if negative feelings don't go away after two weeks, are too much for you to handle, or prevent you from getting on with your normal life. A lack of enthusiasm in life and difficulty in concentrating on routine tasks such as reading a newspaper or watching television could be signs of depression.

This can also affect your diet and sleep. You may resort to comfort eating or losing your appetite. You may find yourself sleeping more than usual, or unable to sleep at all. Suicidal thoughts or thoughts of self-harm are other signs for you to consult your doctor. If you've been experiencing depression symptoms for more than two weeks, you should see your General Practitioner.

During your healing period, it is recommended that you take your time and be nice to yourself. Recovery takes time, so give yourself some time to rest and recover. This can be challenging if the persisting symptoms are ‘hidden’. These are some things that can help you feel more in charge of your emotional and mental well-being if you're having difficulties managing your mood.

Simple lifestyle choices can have a significant impact on your mood. Limit your alcohol consumption, follow a well-balanced diet, get adequate sleep, and exercise regularly (depending on your physical strength).

Frequent phone calls, video chats, or text messages to family and friends might help you uplift your mood. Take baby steps if you don't have the energy to resume your daily activities. Make an effort to engage in little, manageable activities that will provide you with a sense of satisfaction and achievement.
