Project Pepernoot!

What you need for this project:

  • Perpernoten ( I will explain what they are lower in this post.)
  • Wreath in the size you like.
  • Hot glue gun and glue.
  • A carrot.
  • Wishlist.
  • Straw.
  • Small wooden shoe.
  • Wire.
  • Hunger for pepernoten!

You start by heating up your glue gun and setting things up. I would like to send out a nice warning to not stick your fingers in the hot glue because it will really burn your skin off your fingers. This also goes for your nose, cheek and any other part of your body! Hot glue is HOT. Make sure to work carefully when you are using this on your projects!

Glue the Pernoten to the wreath one by one! This will take a lot of time but they stick better this way. The hot glue dries rather quick when it hits the air and the Pepernoot will not stick enough and will fall off. This is something you don't want!

PRO TIP: Put some of the pepernoten in your hand and eat them!

Cover the whole wreath with the pepernoten. I did two layers and I could do this with one bag! This costed me 0,65 Eurocents! Thats hardly nothing! Plus I ate a bunch so... My belly is happy as well!

When your belly is full and you have a smile on your face you glue the small wooden shoe in the middle of the wreath!

Put the wire in the middle of the wreath so you can hang it where ever you want! Mine is hanging at my front door. So everyone who comes to visit will get hungry!

I filled the wooden shoe with some straw, a rolled up wish list and a carrot!

    What is Sinterklaas?

Sinterklaas is a children´s festival, celebrated in The Netherlands and Belgium on December 5th. At the middle of November, Sinterklaas travels from Spain to the Netherlands on his amazing steamboat called ´Pakjesboot 13 (present boat 13)´ On board there are helpers, called ´Zwarte Pieten (Black Petes)´. On this boat, they also transport all the wonderful presents for all children who behaved well throughout the year. Once arrived on the mainland, Sinterklaas gets off the boat to travel across the country on his white horse ´Schimmel (Gray horse)

A few nights until December 5th, children might put their shoes near the chimney in the house, sing songs and leave some straw and a carrot inside their shoes for Amerigo, the horse of Sinterklaas. Sometimes they also place sugar down for the cute horse! If they are lucky (Read, if their parents think the kids deserve it), Sinterklaas will pay them a visit and surprise them with small presents in their shoes. But the kids will never see Sinterklaas in the nights! You see, he goes over the roofs and the black pete's make sure the kids are deep into their dreams! If they sleep, black Pete might go inside through the chimney to make sure the right present ends up in the right shoe. (Read, mom or dad has to get up in the middle of the night and not trip, not break their neck while filling these shoes!)

On December 5th, Sinterklaas visits many children in their house. Some families rent a Sinterklaas because there are many for hire but only ONE real one! (( Sure, sure)) Most of the time, the parents ask a neighbor or family member to knock on the door or windows and run away leaving behind a bag of gifts!. On December 6th, Sinterklaas returns to Spain. And the whole party is over till next year!

What are pepernoten?

A pepernoot is a Dutch cookie-like kind of confectionery, traditionally associated with the early December Sinterklaas holiday in the Netherlands and Belgium. The ingredients have some similarities with German Pfeffernüsse although they look completely different from one type of German Pfeffernüsse. Every year, I eat way too many of them so by the time December 5th hits I can't see them anymore! But for now, I am eating like there is no tomorrow!

Do you celebrate something they don't in other countries?
