Love is a Burning Thing - Lightpainting breakdown

in creativecoin •  5 years ago

Good afternoon all and I hope life is good. Sunday chill day today so I thought I'd share another lightpainting shot and give a little info on how it was done.

I'm a big fan of steel wool in light art, it gives such an awesome effect when set on fire and spun around. The sparks fly and all of the little points of light are captured by the camera's sensor.
I also like to try different things which is how this image was born.

First of all I set up two tripods. One for the steel wool and one for the figure in the middle.

I made a long sausage of wire wool into a circle and laid it on the floor. I pointed my camera straight down so that the circle filled the frame, then focused the lens on the wool and that element was prepared. Next I changed lenses on the camera to a wide angle and moved to tripod 2. This was for the human form in the middle. Again I focused on where the person would be stood and set up the back light. This was a strobe on a light stand covered with an orange gel. I blew some vapour from my e-cigarette into the air and did a test shot. Once happy it was back to tripod 1 and swapped back to the 50mm lens.
I placed a fractal filter on the lens which mirrored the wool effect on either side of the frame. I fired the shutter and set the wool on fire. This burnt like a fuse all the way around creating a burning ring of fire. I replaced the lens cap and swapped lenses to the wide angle. I took the camera to tripod 2 and removed the lens cap. I took up position in the middle of the room and @fastchris removed the lens cap and fired the orange flash behind me and that was job done.

As always this was shot in a single long exposure in complete darkness.

I'm going to revisit this down the line but using a different shape for the wool.

This one was featured on diyphotography.net a while back and contains some extra info on the shot.

Cheers for stopping by folks and as always if you have any questions please drop them in the comments below.

Happy days.
