Deranged Contest - Tuesday Landscape. Adventures with a 50mm prime lens

in creativecoin •  5 years ago  (edited)

Today I'd like to share some photos from Jasper National Park.

The first photo in the post is my entry for the pro tier of the Tuesday Landscape photo contest by @derangedcontests.

This photo shows the Athabasca River with Pyramid Mountain in the background. Out of sight, roughly halfway to the mountain, is the tiny town of Jasper, Alberta. I had my 50mm prime lens on the camera and I was trying to take some good landscape shots. When I spotted the rafts pulled up on shore I thought they would make a nice foreground and add a splash of colour to the photo.

Five minutes earlier

I stood on a bridge over the river with cars and trucks speeding by a couple of feet behind me in order to catch this view. It was from this vantage point that I spotted the orange rafts, just out of frame to the left. I love that 50mm prime lens and it worked well here but of course, it is not ideal for every situation...

Four hours later...

We had arrived in our campground and I was walking around, again with the 50mm which kind of makes sense because it's a fast lens and great for low light situations... BUT... it can't do everything! Here you can see a couple of Elk cows with Pyramid mountain and a sunset in the background. All good so far, but what's that light spot along the tree line?

Here's where I wish I had a zoom lens on the camera.

This is a tight crop taken from the photo above. It's unusable, but I wanted to try to show you what I missed: a bugling bull Elk had just stepped out of the trees and I had no time to run back to camp for a long lens. Oh well, you can't win them all :-)

Thanks a lot, Pix!

Enjoyed that one a lot thanks for sharing

I'm happy you liked this, thank you!

Always happens when you leave that big telephoto lens at home!

Yeah, I know, right? It wouldn't have been too hard to carry with me, so I'm not sure what I was thinking!

These are remarkable photographs highlighting the splendid scenery at Jasper National Park! Makes me want to grab a life jacket, hop into one of those rafts, pushoff shore and paddle down the Athabasca River to take some pics of wildlife and the Pyramid Mountain while taking in the crisp, therapeutic air! Good luck on the contest, my friend! @keithboone Upped & Steemed

Oh, thank you! I believe we will finally get on the road and head into the mountains on Thursday. A snowstorm just went through the area last night and I want to give it another full day to make sure the roads are clear. I believe the eastern slopes of the Rockies got up to ten inches of snow. Yikes! :-)

Sounds like an exciting adventure ahead! I'm excited for you just thinking about the magical photographs of freshly fallen snow you're going to be gifted with! Try to get me a photo or two of footprint tracks from wildlife left in the snow for me. Keith's travel list: fuel up the tank, bring a snow shovel, throw in extra blankets, charge up the portable power station, and find your snow boots! @keithboone Have fun & drive safely!!!

All very good advice! I'll see if I can find you some mountain lion tracks... or more likely, a squirrel :-)

Lol! A mountain lion would be impressive. I'll enjoy any snowy footprints you find, even squirrels! Your northern squirrels are a rusty color more like chipmunks, while the ones by me are silver/gray.

I suppose I could try for bear or wolf prints... oh! or bighorn sheep!

Game on, Keith!

Love that refreshing nature feeling in your photos 👍

Thanks so much, @hangin!

Most welcome 👍
