Oh Steem. Well I guess this will be my final post on HF21. Never liked it anyway. Onward! So this is a little digital sketch I made today. Sometimes I'm sitting around and I'll think of a new approach to do some technical thing and that's what happened here. The thing, is a super in the weeds technical thing, but an application of it allows me to have a nice setup for some snowy mountains.

I had a thought to make this post a little more interesting than just seeing the final result with a screenshot of my desktop in app, which means nothing to almost everyone and I made a video that will mean nothing to almost everyone, but it's a video, so it's better.

It's just a sped up video of me showing how this scene is set up and tweaking a few controls so it's visible what some of the controls are that I have in here. When people are totally new to 3D, they're thinking there's a snowy mountain button somewhere, or that it works like clipart where I just drag and drop a mountain into my scene(it is getting pretty close to this with new innovations and products) but no it's all built from scratch using a bunch of skills and knowledge acquired over years and years, but once you have that knowledge you can whip out pretty cool stuff rather quickly.

This is the shot from the end of the video. I didn't show the entire process, I didn't even know I was going to make a post out of this, it started with me just experimenting with that technical in the weeds thing I mentioned above, and turned into this. This scene is really meant for more far away shots than this one as you can see the pixelation in the closest mountain on this shot, whatevs, you guys get the picture.

See you in HF22!

wake me up when HF23 comes along. 22 is overrated :)

By next week, "Alright, 5th time's a charm, HF25 inbund."

is there still a instant teapot button? so new people in 3D can make an instant tea party

Haha, there actually is a teapot button.

not sure is it is a true story, but from what i remember (i did some light wave when 256mb of ram was a decent PC :D ) the story is that when they started to code (coding 3d objects is mind blowing for me) in 3d someone made teapot because of reflections or something like that. and now because they have the code for it and as some kind of homage for it, you can make box, ball and a teapot with one click :D

edit:
found a link about it http://nautil.us/blog/the-most-important-object-in-computer-graphics-history-is-this-teapot

That's really cool! I actually had no idea about this story.

everytime i sippin i be trippin off that hard fork hard spoon

"Super in the weeds technical thing" XD

Gotta love it when cool things accidentally happen XP

Haha, yea I don't think I want to be the artist version of those developer posts where they're speaking another language to the rest of us.

You do realise some of us want that jargon because we want to know how you did the thing right 😝

Haha, well the big idea was to combine a falloff node in octane and a triplanar node. I can project colors down a single axis with the triplanar node, in this case Y, so up and down, so it realistically make a good snow pattern because snow would collect on the upward facing planes. The falloff node can either create a gradient based on the camera normal, so that's how you can do hologram type effects, or it can create a gradient from top to bottom of your object.

Using a few nodes inbetween to adjust the values I combined these two to be able to make some really flexible and procedural masks that I can then use to reveal between a snow shader and a rock shader with a lot of control.

That seems magical.

I don't have an excuse to create snowy mountains at the moment (everything I have is set in places where it's too warm XD) but I kind of want to play with it...and I know I'm going to node spaghetti if I do XD

oh and you and @juliakponsford and @crimsonclad talking about it on minnowpond.org made me wanna buy and stake CCC tokens

Well being a whale is currently on sale in every tribe so now's probably the time before newnewsteem gets rolling.

Thank you so much for participating in the Partiko Delegation Plan Round 1! We really appreciate your support! As part of the delegation benefits, we just gave you a 3.00% upvote! Together, let’s change the world!

Nice mountains! As someone who is still getting the hang of messing with simple cube meshes in Blender, I know the skill it takes to generate something like that and let me just say: I'm impressed!

You're right, let's leave HF21 in the dust. No one liked it anyways. Let's never use Steem until they change! ...which is just a few hours away, lol

We are all welcome to the new adventure of this new steem
