What's Your Individuality Profile?

in creativity •  7 years ago

Why is creativity stamped out of us as we grow? Replaced by statistics and conformity, we are pushed into following a strict set of rules that someone long ago determined was the road to success.

But who's success?

And who started this in the first place?

It may have been necessary long ago, to control a confused populace. But these ideals are outdated and stifling.

Have you ever felt stuck in the same old routine and wondered is this it? Searched for meaning in life; wondering where is the passion or purpose, and how to shake things up?

We are each a sentient being, completely unique and beautiful in our own skin. We have different wants and needs, it's time we stop expecting success through conformity. It's time we start utilizing the originality we were born with.

It is time to make our own rules and embrace the creative individual within.

Creativity is a part of everyday life. When you decorate your flat, create a dish from scratch, or figure out the best way to organize your files you are using your creativity. We use it for the necessary things in life.

But are you using this powerful force to change your life?

We buy that new outfit or device and think it's going to make us happy. And it does. Superficially for a little bit. Until the new one is released and we want to upgrade.

This tells you it was fleeting happiness.

Or look to our romantic partner, mistakenly believing they are the source of our happiness. This is a recipe for disappointment. Sure, the chemicals that are secreted when you are with them make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, but that too is fleeting.

There is only one thing that can make you happy. And that is (drum roll please…) your creativity.

Creativity is not just for artists and sculptors. Creativity is life making. It is anything we do that changes us and inspires us, turns us on, brings us lasting joy, or invigorates us and motivates..

For me, I love to write. Creating worlds and weaving ideas into sentences give me great joy. I also love being on the radio and acting. And horses. I have great fun riding horses across mountains and meadows.

We each have something we love doing, or something we know we would enjoy but allow the "bigger" things in life to take precedence. Or have allowed another to squelch. Or judge as a little hobby as if it is insignificant.

And even scarier, we impart this ideal onto subsequent generations.

When I was little, I don't how many times I was told to "stop daydreaming" and "it's time to be serious."

I am a child! You want me to be serious? And stop imagining? As an adult I make a living with my imagination! Had they abolished that, I would not be here writing this with you now!

But the unfortunate truth was I had to hide my creativity. I had to stifle it and hide it- literally do it in secret as if it were an obscene thing.

We need to stop this domino stagnation effect. Encourage play and creativity in new generations. Never make them to feel as if it's something bad that needs to be done behind closed doors.

The things that are enjoyed hold far more significance in our lives and growth than we realize.

I felt like letting Ren & Stimpy express my love for your post!
While conformity kept the cogs and wheels turning, creativity made machines to fly! It's (not) funny how something so important to our mental well-being (and society) gets thrust aside for productivity.
Remember building forts? I'll come home sometimes and my kids have transformed the living and dining using every sheet, blanket, and pillow in the house. No matter how tired I feel, it's too much fun to resist! It's heartening to find others that realize how vital it is to let go, play and be silly! Have a great day and dance on @arbitrarykitten!

I agree Enjoy life, laugh often, and love without restraint. It's the only way to live :)

@arbitrarykitten,

Love your perspective.

"Perspective is everything. Many people see the circle, but only a few can see the spiral..."

Namaste, my friend.

Hello JaiChai! Hope your day is most excellent!

So very true. It's all in the perspective. Bill Gates can pass up a $100 bill he sees in the gutter at a stop light, for it would probably cost him money to turn around, park his Mercedes and retrieve it. But to a hungry family who's dad just was laid off and living on just mom's paycheck- that bill could mean the heat stays on this month.

Perspective is everything.

@arbitrarykitten,

Reading your words gives me the same feeling as looking at this:

Warm, fuzzies all over.

Just like the puppy, I just want to pick up your words and make them my own...

Namaste,

JaiChai

That is endearing, and inspiring :) Thank you, your appreciation in motivating <3

@arbitrarykitten this posting just made me Feel Good. I don't want to conform with some kind of norm. I always look for ways to keep on moving away from this corrupt system.

That makes me so happy to hear that!

Good- what's "normal" anyway? There is no such thing- it's a lie conjured so we will pay taxes ;)

Love You for your comment yes taxes EXTORTION from the Masses.

We live lives of mundane melancholy
Looking for excitement and meaning and the will to keep dreaming instead of dying inside is part of the struggle that is humanity. A belief blind faith or a fools dream it is best to be optimistic of the path that our tomorrows bring.

It is necessary to be optimistic.

Indeed. I've been yapping (and writing) about this for years albeit less eloquently than you've expressed it here.

Our entire society is about conforming to the herd. If you deviate from that, you will be diagnosed with enter disorder or deficit here and medicated.

I spent the most vibrant years of my childhood discouraged and chained to a desk by a little drug called Ritalin. Fortunately, my mother through the grace of God decided that was wrong and I've been off medication since age 12.

The time for change has come in so many areas of the World and society in general. This is one of them.

They tentatively brought up ritalin when my boys started entering their school age years. Absolutely no.

Sure, we had more work. They are active boys. But guess what? They are excellent athletes now. And all are fantastic writers receiving accolades- my oldest son was in trouble for plagiarism in 4th grade. The school believed there was no way he could write so well. Lol, they finally had to apologize ;)

I am so sorry you fell victim to the chemical conformity, but I am very happy your mother seen the light so to speak and pulled you from the abyss.

Indeed, so am I.

beautifully written @arbitrarykitten

Thank you, I appreciate that :)

"stop daydreaming" - hah! never did happen.

Verrry gud ;)

This is lovely. I agree that there is creativity in everything. Also "sentient" is one of my favorite words!

Hello Jayna! Wonderful meeting you :)

Thanks <3

Wonderful to meet you too - another creative spirit!

Good to read a motivational article like this in the morning.

I am so glad it is inspiring for you!!

Very well said. Everyone is far too serious. I see miserable people who appear wonder round with shuffle accustomed to misery. Then you speak with the and the don't give any time to having a joke, letting our their trapped inner child. The happy people in life have a much better balance of being serious and enjoying their life. We have to think who are they living their life for the miserable people because it not for themselves that for sure.\

So I say be creative have a laugh and encourage those around you, including your kids their young and school is dull and authoritarian let them live :)

You are absolutely correct. You must have a sense of humor and a light heart :)

Thanks, some say a rather dark sense of humor but i've always said if you can't laugh at it you don't fully understand it :)

I have never heard that particular phrase, but I like it!

Think I might have made it up but I like it ;)
