I love The Critical Drinker's film reviews, but, I gotta point out an area were he's been wrong a few times. He seems to be attacking, mostly the Marvel movies, for rolling the dice on independent filmmakers to make $200 million blockbusters.
Yeah, it wouldn't have been a good idea to give Christopher Nolan Batman Begins right after Following and Memento; but, still, the jump from Insomnia to Batman was still massive. If we made every director dink and dunk from ultra low budget movies to mega budget movies, just about every director would be too old by the time that we gave them the keys, they probably would have made a few bad movies along the way, and it would still be a gamble because every movie is a gamble. Ridley Scott has been cranking out huge movies for decades and he still makes stinkers on occasion.
Some people are good at spotting talent and making those decisions. Spielberg was still working in television before they gave him Jaws. The Russo brothers had been working on shows like community up to taking on Marvel. These jumps do happen and sometimes the jumps are successful and sometimes they're not.
Chloe Zhao got Eternals off the strength of The Rider, not Nomadland. Also kinda slow, but a much better movie in my opinion. I’ve been to a Q&A with Kevin Feige and when asked about how they pick indie filmmakers for Marvel movies, he said strong focus on character is what they’re looking for.
