Should ONO sign up to replace Facebook? Open Book Challenge Competition

in crypto-news •  7 years ago  (edited)

Open Book Challenge

We are looking to fund seven purpose-driven teams that want to build a billion-user social network to replace Facebook -- while protecting consumer privacy.

We want to invest in replacements that don’t manipulate people and that protect our democracy from bad actors looking to spread misinformation.

Stellebelle recently introduced us to ONO. She mentioned how it is currently being rolled out in China. Upon contemplation I realized that the real competitor isn't Steem vs ONO but Steem+ONO vs Facebook. A new competition has been announced funded by Silicon Valley to offer an open alternative to replace Facebook. Ono and Steem both may enter this competition. Steem can utilize an SMT to create an entry into this competition while ONO can simply announce that they are entering this competition. The problem right now is I do not see anyone in the cryptospace even acknowledging this competition.

The fact that it is not even acknowledged highlights the problems with the cryptocommunity. An unwillingness to see the big picture and to work together against the actual competitors. Rather than crypto projects competing against themselves why not actually focus on networking and winning the big battle?

For more about this competition check out this LINK. It is called the OpenBookChallenge.

As @stephenkendal has promoted to #deletefacebook and #joinsteemit, I think we are already at war of this competition, and it is really good to have ONO as an ally to win this competition @dana-edwards. thank for sharing this information across the platform

Regards

Certainly the challengee in this game is Facebook (and other centralised platforms). And of course being the MAIN competitor is a rank of its own. Although i like Steem i don't see it in this role, because (even with SMT i guess) its 100% public, and with Facebook you can share content with your friends only. Here ONO with its circles concept looks like a real challenger, but let's wait and see what Dan will come up with, since he has announced Steem 2.0

What Steem 2.0?

Knowing Dan, Steem 2.0 will be sharedropped on Steem 1.0. It would be a brilliant move to steal Steem from Ned and put it on EOS. Steem on EOS is the only thing I can imagine to be Steem 2.0...

yes, it should be something along this line, but well until now it's only a title...

I think its a very interesting discussion and dilemma @dana-edwards . I would love to check out ONO but Im not thrilled that it is only available in China right now. I'm more in favor of Steemit and those that I have talked to at Facebook itself like Steemit. I really don't believe facebook is going anywhere so building a replacement is not really the answer. I just think we need an alternative. I hope that alternative is steemit but I'll check out ONO when they let me.

@dana-edwards Thanks for your insightful article. We completely agree with you. Now that we have this added knowledge that you have provided, we can do more research. If you have ideas how we can all work in a more cooperative fashion, please do let us know, via writing articles here seems to be a great way of us learning from you. Again, thanks for this information as we did not know about the competition of which you spoke.

We are now following you, have upvoted and resteemed this article.

I thought that China was actively against cryptocurrencies, banning exchanges and ICOs and whatnot.

ONO has no ICO. It is building a social network, and letting the social cultivators create value before it's opened up to the general public. Crypto speculators also will not be the main drivers of the ONO ecosystem. This is done to ensure that the value can be created by the people who build out the social ecosystem, before anything else occurs, like speculators gaining control of the coin.

I realize, what is more important is whether or not crypto is against China. China in my opinion wants to protect China and it's going to be difficult for crypto to exist in China in a manner which isn't deemed threatening by China. The same dynamic exists in all countries.

So many social network software proyects, yet the plan is to build another one.

Wow : that post is so inspiring and useful thank you .

This is amazing. I have joined. thank you information. I really appreciate it

If that's true I want steem to be superior, because a lot of useful information here

Its just amazing to me that Steem and ONO don't have more mainstream attention. Especially, Steem with about a million registered users. The Facebook privacy violations was the perfect storm to snowball the masses into blockchain based Social Media apps. I just hope Steem will get the required updates rolled out in a timely manner; including SMT's, HF #20, Communities (Hives). How do you get ONO tokens? I heard they may be air dropped to EOS holders?

You can earn ONOT's on the ONO dApp when the international version is released (date to be announced). You can become an ONO volunteer by joining our Telegram channel, and educating others, and becoming a volunteer is actually the very first step in earning. There's a small amount of ONOT which can be claimed if one completes the tasks on Candy.one: https://ibo.candy.one/task
You can decide how much involvement you want in building out the social ecosystem. There will be a cap of invitations, as the registration for the general public will come later after the ecosystem is built and is stable. In the summer, general registrations will open, date to be announced.

Why did you choose to regionally release ONO? Controversial decision. Okay when I get the chance I'll try the microtasks.

I don't have any ONO tokens so I don't really know. Maybe it's a closed society?

It is not a closed society. Anyone is free to join our Telegram channel and ask questions to learn more. Most questions can be answered by reading the White Paper.

I agree, I am seeing few "big picture" thinkers among the crypto community, but then, I saw few "big picture" thinkers when I was a stockbroker in the 80s.

Most people truly can't (or won't) see the forest for the trees.

Hopefully Steemit, and perhaps ONO, will help fuel a change in attitude.

IDK it seems silly to me to host a competition to see who gets funding to "replace facebook" because that is not how it works

thanks @ dana-edwards this is good information .. i hope this all goes smoothly☺

Ono does sure have potential and the things needed to roll on in the run ,while Steemit is sure in a good position as well and together it will be a hard build up against Facebook. As People will realize the the difference they sure will give a chance to both and eventually they will like them both.(STEEMIT & ONO)
