Buying my first jpeg NFT on Opensea

So Yesterday, I ended up buying my first ever Profile Picture NFT that I intend to use on my blog and in the discord from now on.

I have never really understood the concept of buying NFT Pictures for thousands of dollars and the entire mintable PFP scene of crypto. I pretty much think it's a complete joke with prices being crazy high for pretty much everything and 99,9% of these pictures to eventually turn out in worthless jpegs nobody cares about. Obviously so far, the market has proven me wrong as pictures of monkeys go for 100k+

Anyway, I do like the idea of having an NFT that you can use as a profile picture and the ones I always kind of liked since first seeing them in an article were the Weird Whales. They were written about on many news sites as it was a 12-year-old kid that created them making I believe over half a million in sales.

At the time they were crazy expensive going for over 500$ which is something I would never pay as I'm not into the entire speculation thing. For me, they are just pictures that can be used for a profile and it's nice to actually 'own' them instead of just copy-pasting the image. With that in mind, I notcied myself looking how these Weird Whales were doing and if there were any that I actually liked available. I like to keep it simple preferably with a light blue background, a dark Blue whale with no cigarette or cigar in the mouth and no hat or weird color eyes all at an as cheap as possible price.

Obviously, this is almost impossible to find but the one I spotted yesterday came close enough and I didn't hesitate to buy it for 120$ (including Gas Fees) which if you think about is still crazy expensive for a jpeg.

Speculative Value
While the picture itself and me owning this 1 NFT is more than enough without ever needing the option to resell it or make a profit. It's not that far-fetched to see some speculative value also. The project has got a pretty unique story to it and there are only 3350 of these Whales in total. The kid that made it at his age now is heavily into crypto and surely has some skills so it's not unthinkable for him to grow up a billionaire wanting to give back to the NFT Mint project that started it all.

This is where to find them on Opensea and the kid who created them on twitter is @ObiWanBenoni
