It has been announced today that the popular Ethereum and ERC-20 coins wallet MyEtherWallet will now be MyCrypto (or the majority of the MEW team is leaving to work on MyCrypto while MEW stays up). The message was given via Medium article from one half of the MEW team founders, Taylor Monahan (Tayvano). Monahan gave a long run down on the history of MEW describing the original project as something Monahan and other founder, Kvhnuke, worked on in their free time. Never anticipating that MEW would become such a big part of the Ethereum infrastructure, the MEW team rapidly grew as well as had continuous updates to the code and product itself.
What was once a fun little side project turned into a huge operation and legit company, and the rebranding of MEW into MyCrypto in 2018 will ensure a solid foundation, company, team, and product.
It was a lengthy announcement that gave a terrific look into the history of the MEW project. There was not a real in depth explanation on why MEW had to change to MyCrypto instead of continuing operations under the same name. Monahan only states that MEW was sufficient for the early stages of growth, while MyCrypto will be designed with next-level scaling in mind from the beginning.
It does appear MEW will still be up and running, owned by Kvhnuke, who also owns the Github repository, the MyEtherWallet.com domain, and AWS instance. It appears Tayvano must have owned the MEW twitter as it has already turned into the official MyCrypto twitter.
No words of bad blood between Tayvano and Kvhnuke have been made, all though Tayvano (Monohan) and the team she assembled will no longer be apart of the MEW project and will devote all their time and operations the MyCrypto infrastructure. Kvhnuke has yet to make a statement but MEW operations should continue as usual.
