When the internet first started, it grew in popularity and usefulness. Democracies flourished around the world. As the internet became more adopted, there became more negative use cases that came about which caught the eye of governments and regulators. Sound familiar....not exactly too different from Bitcoins early days of Silk Road or drugs, etc.
Governments wanted a blanket ban in the case of the internet which luckily did not happen. A ban of the internet would have hurt innovation and made the world less connected. The same can be said about cryptocurrency if there were to be a ban.
As I watched the CFTC and SEC meeting, I realized that this time it was going to be different for virtual currencies than it was for the internet. CFTC chairman Giancarlo and SEC chairman Jay Clayton clearly understood that this was their moment to embrace this technological innovation that is the blockchain and cryptocurrencies. Killing this innovation would do generations to come a disservice, and would halt progress for generations to come. And I now know, we have nothing to worry about in the cryptocurrency space...Keep holding and long live the blockchain!
