E Corp (Mr. Robot) issues their own cryptocurrency (E Coin), which you can USE in San Diego

So I was reading the fake website for E Corp (from Mr. Robot) and saw that they are "issuing" their own cryptocurrency–E Coin. At first I thought it was just a gimmick for the imaginary Red Wheelbarrow restaurant, which is advertised on the site. But then, I realized that they also have a site for the coin, which you can register an account for. Once registered, you are presented with a slew of restaurant options, all of them REAL (even Wheelbarrow). One weird thing though, they are all in San Diego.

I was intrigued. Could they have issued their own ERC20 token and made it so that they can be used with a select group of restaurants just as a marketing stunt? After some digging, I learned that it's a stunt they're pulling at Comic-Con.

The gist is that they'll have a physical E Corp bank location, which fans can get a physical E Corp Card from, loaded with E Coin. Alternatively, anyone can redeem E Coins by signing up for an account.

I'm pretty impressed by this and excited by what the next season will bring. I wonder if they had to start changing their script as crypto became much more mainstream over the last few months. Perhaps they should do an ICO and make the show indie!

Thoughts? Anybody have any additional insights on this?

The rabbit hole goes pretty deep on this one.

Seems to be a new part of their alternate reality game that is happening as a sidecar to the show, and as a way to tie in the real world to the Mr. Robot world. They have website cyphers, defcon badges, and now e-coins, which don't feel blockchain based to me.

Cool! It's awesome that you actually got the card. Make sure to keep that around, I'm sure it'll be worth something one day.

While we don't know if it's blockchain-based, it won't be hard for them to build something on their own ERC20 token. It's just another technology after all and maybe even easier to use than a fiat-based stunt.
