The process for determining yesterday's trending news is as follows:

Raw trollbox logs are analyzed to find valid http links
Links that were seen previously are filtered out
Links that were posted by a single author are filtered out
Low value links or links related to old news are filtered out
Links are manually classified by topic and/or token
Link groups are assigned an activity level, ranging from low (several unique authors) to medium to high (tens of unique authors)
Key points are extracted from each link group

Disclaimer

Trollbox data is messy. And at this moment my entity extraction engine is quite primitive, so missed messages, incorrect classification and false positives are to be expected.
