The Fishbank Stable Release is Here!
The battle is on in the fish-eat-fish underwater world of Fishbank. The stable release went live on March 18th as scheduled and without any of the network issues that plagued CryptoKitties. So far, so good.
Fish Fight!
As promised, I went through the process of engaging in several fish fights to see how the process works and report back with my findings. I have to say, the process is much more streamlined and with a lot more functionality than over on CryptoKitties.
Round #1
After signing into my account, I went on the prowl to find a suitable 'victim' for my first attack. You are able to sort by class (Common, Rare, Legendary, etc) to help make sure you're not a tiny fish throw'n down against an Orca Whale. I found a candidate that was at a slight disadvantage to my own fish, because that seems like the common sense thing to do.
Once you select you opponent and initiate the transaction from your MetaMask wallet, it's up to the network and the fish Gods as to how long it takes and who will win.
The stats update in real-time which is really nice. you can also click the (i) icon to jump over and see the transaction details on the network. **ONLY $0.07 USD for the transaction, that at least makes this game fair and accessible to more people to play. The highest any of my attack transactions cost me was $0.14 USD.
Surprise, Surprise...
My fish got its ass handed to it (or perhaps bitten off is more appropriate) in my first fish fight. This sets the stage to show that the power and agility ratings of your fish are not the only factor in the fight algorithm, nor is the size. So out ranking an opponent is not a 100% guarantee of victory. Fish #1 is in time-out, "cooldown" for a few hours.
On to Round #2
After my first round loss, I selected another challenger and brought my next fish into the arena.
Well, that didn't go so well either. My fish had higher stats than the opponent again, but still lost. At this point I was wondering if I was doing something wrong in how I chose my opponents.
Round #3 - FIGHT!
I decided to let my third fish have a go at it. I chose an opponent with the same stats as the other, but smaller in size this time to see what difference that would make.
Finally a win... a 1 ounce win, but a win nonetheless! From this I am assuming the victory earns you a % of the defeated fish's starting size.
I continued though a few more attack rounds after my other fish came out of the cooldown period, and also tested the "Unite" feature.
Fishes Unite!
The Unite feature allows one of your own fish to bite off a piece of one of your other fish to gain a much bigger size relative to what you could get in a standard attack battle, up to 100% of the starting size of the fish that wins. It wasn't clear on how this really worked at first, I assumed the fish I clicked "Unite" on would gain the size from the other fish I then chose. This was not the case, they go to battle just like when you chose and opponent and the winner gains the big chunk from the loser. So the Angelfish I wanted to get bigger got beaten, and my other fish got much bigger.
From this point on I sent all my fish to attack others and started on a winning streak. Which I suppose is part strategy on the opponents I chose, and part luck of the algorithm draw. My fish are all in good shape and waiting out their required cooldown periods before they can fight again.
Interactivity
As a side note, the only way to protect your fish from attack while your not playing the game is to have them listed for sale in the marketplace, or but a rather expensive freeze powerup that locks the fish for 7 or 30 days.
This is one of the features that will keep the users engaged in the game over time or they risk having their fish attacked by much larger fish and coming back to a beat up fish.
While it's not a game you can continuously play, you do need to actively return to check on things everyday to protect or potentially grow the value of your fish tokens.
This user interactivity is something CryptoKitties lacked and a big reason everyone gave up on the concept pretty fast. Even if they add in user interactivity now, it's probably to late to regain that initial interest.

Amazingly the Ethereum Network is Holding Up OK
Compared to a total meltdown when CryptoKitties was launched.

Yeah, it's not a full on "game" as we think of them, but more of a "digital pet" that you have to look after to potentially increase the value of them over time.
Tonight on EOSTalk Live! we are interviewing SFEOS.io, they are working or a true crypto-backed/blockchain game based on the EOSIO software. I am interested in how these types of "real games" are received when they launch.
