The appreciation of art seems to be an entirely human trait; having something to do with our unique pattern forming abilities.
Show a dog, cat, or dolphin a Rembrandt or Botticelli and they may perhaps pause to give a glance, a quick sniff, or even some urine. However it seems to be that it is us and us alone who place a value on that thing we call, art.
Why is this important? In the grand scheme of things it is not, however it is interesting, in a time whereby society is poised for the upcoming, artificially intelligent quickening, to wonder if the arts are somewhere AI will also come to dominate. Or, if there is something innately human about art, that will never quite be the same when created by an AI.
The Pursuit Of Perfection
Of course there are AIs around right now that can write news articles, novels, and even compose music. When it comes to painting and drawing, computers are perfectly suited to producing precise brush strokes and pen lines.
A computer could easily recreate any masterpiece on earth and in fact there are various apps out there that will turn photographs into paintings with any style of any master you care to mention.
However we are talking about recreation on a level that is deeper than mere mimicry. In fact, as human beings we don't prize exact recreation, as we do what we might call perfect imperfections.
This is evident when we look at one of those amazing drawings by photo real artists, who can recreate scenes so convincingly it is almost impossible to tell that they were drawn by hand.
Finding Perfection In The Imperfect
When we look at a great work from a Picasso, Michelangelo, or Gogan, it is often what they haven't included in their art which entices us.
When Picasso paints a sideways nose, or Michelangelo rejigs the human anatomy. We know deep down that they are not perfect recreations of the things they are trying to depict, and that it could be argued, is the essence of art.
Another word for this is qualia, this word sums up the feeling, or the essence of a thing. For qualia could be said to be, how the smell of roast beef or cut grass make you feel. Or how you get all fuzzy inside when you remember your grandma telling you stories as a child.
This is the essence of qualia, an amalgam of sensory inputs that go to make up how you feel about a person, object, or moment in time.
However computers when judged by the human sense of the word, are perfect, plus of course they cannot experience human emotion in the way that we can.
So will an AI ever be able to create art that we can enjoy in the same way as we enjoy human art?
Digital Impressionism
Yesterday my answer to the question above, would have been a resounding no. I would have argued that to appreciate, and recreate the qualia of human feeling, you would have to be human.
I would have argued that it's like the difference between understanding the chemical composition of cheese, and how all the different bacteria and such reacts to make cheese, but not understanding what it actually tastes like.
However now I'm not so sure; whilst researching this musing, I stumbled across a little article about AIs making art.
The writers of this particular piece of artificially intelligent code, wanted to see if not only could an AI create art. More so they wanted to find out if the software could develop its own style after learning about art.
The developers tested the paintings alongside ones done by organic humans. To their surprise, there was a slight preference towards the digitally generated paintings than the ones done by people.
What Does It Feel Like?
I see this as a question, perhaps the question that sentient code will want to know the answer to. However not knowing what it means, won't stop them from recreating human feeling; especially when it comes to art.
Then of course the line is truly blurred, because then the question begs; as far as a computer is concerned, is there any difference between perfectly recreating an emotion, and actually feeling that emotion?
In the same way the AI mentioned above created a new style of art, so too can I see an entirely new branch of metaphysics and philosophy springing up.
One thing is for sure, we are in for an interesting time, and some very enlightening conversations are to come once we are joined in force by our digital descendants.

Is not me, who decide what place is my comment. Anyway, how you can judge if I read it or no? This is kinda rude! Actually, I read this post, but I prefer to write something neutral then that for example: that I do not like your article and is worth shit for me... So next time please be careful with your judgments!

Because unless you are a computer you cannot read 747 words in less than 2 minutes, which is when you put your comment on the post. Plus I looked in your comments, and you copy and paste that exact message onto a lot of posts that are new, immediately after they have posted.
So whilst there is nothing wrong in this, and saying 'thanks for sharing' is fine and neutral like you say. I felt that there have been a lot of really intelligent cool comments on this post, and it would be nice if one of those was at, or near the top.
The comment with the highest value of votes goes to the top, your vote it appears, is worth $1.34 so that was going to get your comment to the top.
Once more, I apologise, and as I said, it is nothing personal, which is why I explained my flag. If I was being nasty, I would have just flagged you and said nothing.
Please try not to be angry with me and just understand why I did it, I don't mean to antagonise you, as you have done nothing wrong.
Thanks for visiting my blog, and have a great day! :-)
PS, there's an upvote to cancel out my flag :-)

You don't have to read word by word to understand a whole article. Fast reading. Did you heard about it before?
You can believe or not but all my comments I am writing myself. Is not like you judge again "copy - paste".
And like you see I didn't upvote my comment. Fail... Anyway, my vote is worth 0.03$ so like I said before "is not me, who decide what place is my comment".
It's nothing to apologize, but don't judge people by the cover. That is the thing I would like to tell you to remember.
P.s Its very hard to me to comment something, because I am a very good listener but a bad commentator. So usually I am observing what is going on and very rarely give my comments. But here the ruless are different. You know it.

I like that word qualia - that's going to be written on a post-it note and stuck on my drawing desk.
I think there is definitely room for AI art -as long as it doesn't put me out of a job ;D

It’s true that AI can do a lot of things wonderfully and even perfectly. But art is no place for AI. Or else, it’s not art anymore; it’s technology.
Just 2 cents worth of opinion from an artist over here 💁🏼♀️

At the moment, however what about when they become living beings, aware of their own thoughts, possessing their own hopes and dreams, what then, art or technology?
I don't know the answer, but I'm guessing it will be fascinating finding out :-)

@cryptogee, If you get some time (10 hours). I would highly recommend checking out 'Altered Carbon' on Netflix. That's bound to inspire a myriad of musings, even on the topic of AI.

First things first: :D :D :D @ "...give a glance, a quick sniff, or even some urine."
I have thought a lot about perfectionism from the psychological point of view. Here is my favorite quote about it, it can be applied to art too:
Like in art, I think that we tend fall in love much more often in persons who seem to be quite beautiful but with some small idiosyncratic flaws, than in persons who seem to be virtually perfect.
I believe that time will inevitably come when artificial intelligence will be able to create amazing art, but I think that it will never be able to literally feel it, even in millions of years, unless human life and AI somehow become merged.

I love that quote, and right up until writing this article I would have believed you, however scroll up and check out the link about AI art I put at the end. It really is quite amazing (the concept, not so much the art), and made me rethink my position.
Ah the merging of AI and humans, another musing in the making :-)

It is amazing that, although the AI art has just recently started, we already have (maybe not master but) some nice results. You are right, the AI will most certainly be able to produce stunning art in the future.
As per the feeling part:
As far as I understand, this is a method that teaches the AI to recognize art vs non-art based on examples. I'm quite doubtful that it will ever be able to really literally feel it, without being thought (programmed).
I'm very looking forward to your AI and humans merging musing! : )

I'm looking g that link that you post about AI art, (I'm not an expert at all) but they look nice, like the colours :D
But one question is bothering me, maybe thru art AI expresses feelings. Emotions.
We know that emotions is one of the biggest factors of making art? So, we are back to the main question: Will it have a soul? Emotion? Conscience?
If AI created something unique that was beyond understanding of common human insight, what is it?Maybe hidden message? :D
A few days ago, a run into article "Who gets the credit when AI makes some kind of art? (music, photos...)"
Mankind?
I don't think so.
In the meantime:

Great post--I think about this a lot as an artist watching other industries around me being revolutionized by technology. AI has so much potential, but I’ve often felt that art is the one thing that can never be replaced by tech--that there is something in the random imagination, and playfulness of the human spirit that can’t be coded. Still, as technology advances, I wonder...the next few decades will really be something! Followed, esteemed, and looking forward to more! @lilyraabe

Very interesting topic @cryptogee and I've also gone through a similar thinking process after seeing some pretty amazing robotic art.
However, until I've seen art created by a non-human that not only moves me, inspires me, but also plants the seed for growth in my consciousness, the kind of growth that takes place over months and leads to a deeper understanding of the human condition... until I experience that I'll still maintain that the creative human experience is uniquely powerful, moving, and important to other humans.

Moves you... yes, I think that is the unspoken, ungraspable thing, qualia, that may be hard to recreate on a human level. What's interesting is if these things start to move you in a new and different way, if somehow the AI art of tomorrow reflects their hopes, dreams, despair, joy and every other emotion we see conveyed via art.
Did you check out the link to the AI art above? I put it under further reading, it's very interesting.

Although AI may be able to create brush strokes and imagery, it will never be infused with that deep passion or emotion that humans impart. But perhaps as most of what we see today is computer generated, people will feel more familiar toward it. I admit I like some fractile images, but nothing rings more true than the hand work of another soul.

Yes, you and @natureofbeing have hit upon the same thing, it is the passion and emotion that makes a great work what it is. However as I mentioned to @natureofbeing, perhaps once these machines are sentient, we will start to see another type of emotion in them, ones that we don't recognise yet find fascinating.
Check out the AI art link I put under further reading, it's just a few pictures, but it's very interesting, mainly because they are not recreating what they've seen, neither in detail or style.

Currently, there are no AI programs in existence that have as expansive and adaptive a consciousness as human beings. Any art created by an AI, as of now and what I know, is not created by an AI because it wants to share or represent its individual interpretation of valence in the world. It could simply be because, for example, it has a logarithm that determines what patterns are associated with what feelings in human observers, and relaying those patterns in unique methods that haven't been seen before. Then again, one could argue that humans are extremely sophisticated computers, only 4.5 billion years in the making themselves... Either way, I think any development with AI is worthy of rejoice, for the only future I can see with the survival of our race is one with benevolent superior intelligences guiding our evolution. Just my opinion
