Researchers at the Trend Micro cyber security firm revealed that there was an increase of nearly 1 000% cryptojacking between January and July 2018 compared to the second half of 2017.
Cryptojacking involves hacking a computer to crypt cryptocurrency.
"A noticeable change"
Trend Micro's 2018 half-year report, "Invisible Threats, Imminent Losses," highlights the alarming increase in the number of unauthorized seizures of computer resources dedicated to crypto-mining.
The August 28 document refers to the move from highly visible and ubiquitous malware attacks to the relatively silent but devastating deployment of cryptojacking.
"Over the last few months, we have also seen a noticeable change from a very visible ransomware to a more discreet detection: crypto-mining [cryptojacking] when this mining is done without the knowledge of owners]. These damaging threats - from minors slowly infiltrating victims' devices to the serious vulnerabilities that leave machines open to covert attacks - divide limited security resources and divide the attention of IT administrators, " society.Trend Micro's comments echo those of Kaspersky. It seems that the criminals of the cryptocurrency industry have abandoned the ransomware to turn to cryptojacking.
Some statistics
The unauthorized crypto-mining activity more than doubled in the first half of 2018 compared to the last half of 2017. Nevertheless, this situation was already forecast by analysts who stated a clear acceleration of future incidents in the cryptocurrency sector. .
The cryptojacking malware families also reportedly increased. 47 have been recently flushed out, demonstrating the growing interest of cyber criminals in the industry.
The criminals insidiously use computers of organizations or individuals to undermine cryptocurrencies without the consent of the owners. Many electronic devices are damaged because of illicit activities carried out without the owners' knowledge. According to the report:"From the point of view of the company, the presence of unauthorized cryptocurrency miners in the network is an alarm signal not only for the individual user affected, but also for the overall security of the network. "The situation is all the more frightening knowing that few cyber security companies have been successful in tracking hackers. Yet, the number of criminals is increasing day by day.
"It is interesting to note that these trends persisted even though the value of the cryptocurrencies itself declined throughout the first half of the year. "
