Yomari
Yomari, also called** Yamari** is eaten in the month of Poush(December) especially in Purnima (Full moon day).It is a steamed dumpling that consists of an exernal covering of rice flour and an inner content of sweet substances such as** Chaku(Molases),coconut powder. It is a delicacy food item and plays an important role in Newar society, and is a key part of the festival of Yomari Purnima. It is believed that its triangular shape was derived from one half of "Shadkond" and is symbol of Goddess Saraswati and wisdom.
The word Yamari is the combined form of two Nepali words, "ya:" meaning "to like" and "mari**" meaning "delicacy" which means Yomari is a delicacy which is very popular. It is a sweet Newari desert steamed and served hot. This festival is said to have started from the Panchal nagar located in Panauti district of Nepal. Suchandra and Krita, a married couple started making it with fresh yield rice from their field. It was served to other villagers. As the food was liked by all villagers and named Yamari, which means "tasty bread". The couple also offered Yamari to lord Kubera(Goddess of wealth), who was passing by their village. When he tastes it, Kubera liked it so much that he blessed the couple with wealth. He also declared whoever will prepare and serve yamari to others on the full moon of December, will get rid of poverty. It is also believed that, the longer the tail of Yamari, shorter the winter.
