The story of King Kuru who sanctifies a field to become a holy land can be listened to in Wamanapurana, and is linked to Kurukshetra's history.

Kurukshetra's history is also attributed to the existence of the Kuru tribe, who often performed prayers on the banks of the Saraswati and Drishadvati rivers, two rivers flowing in the Kurukshetra region.

Kurukshetra appears in the epic of the Mahabharata. In the story, Kurukshetra was used as a battlefield when the Kuru (Korawa) descendants fought for power with their half-siblings, the Pandavas. After 18 days, the battle was won by the Pandavas.

A few kilometers from Kurukshetra there is a village called Amin. There is a remnant of a fortress believed to be the Abimanyu fortress, one of the Pandavas, at the time of the war in Kurukshetra.
