Korea was a traditional confucian society where females were supposed to inferior to male.
But it seems that korean females are doing better than korean males in all aspects of international and global level, for example, in sports, arts and etc.
In fact korean women were doing very well through our history, so I‘d like to continue a female story in history.
The one whom I’d like to post is Nongae who is well known as a righteous Ghisaeng(Geisha) in JInjoo where is located in Southern beach in Korea.

It was the Japanese invasion(1592AD) when Nongae had been living. She originally came from a noble family, but she became a Ghisaeng due to the ruin of her family. At that time in Choson dynasty, it was not rare that daughters of ruined family became Ghisaengs for money to support their family.

There was a nothing known about her family. But when Japan invaded Choson Dynasty, she was a concubine of general Choi Kyeonghoe. It was said that she was very talented writer especially in poem.

Nongae had supported for general Choi to fight against Japanese Army. At last 1593 AD in Jinjoo fortress, there was a fierce battle. Choson Army was defeated and all of generals and soldiers were killed in that battle. That was second battle in Jinjoo castle. At the first battle, Japanese were totally defeated. So Doyotomo Hideyoshi the ruler of Japan ordered to conquer the Jinjoo castle. Japanese Army had 100,000 soldier, but there were 9000 soldiers in Choson army. The battle had been continued for 6 days. The Choson army was defeated and all of soldiers were killed in action. Moreover civilians who had helped the Choson army were slaughtered. The massacred numbered was vary from 20,000 of Japanese record to 60,000 of Choson dynasty.

General Choi committed suicide after the defeat. Nongae, heard of his death, made up her mind to revenge to his husbands death. After the victory in the battle, Japanese commander had a party for his generals. Nongae, deceiving her identity, took part in the party and seduce a general to the rock by the river.

She hold him and jumped into the river. At that time she had put rings in all her fingers not to lose Japanese general

It was heroic behavior. Choson Dynasty erected monument for her.

The question occurred to me when I had visited there.

What made her sacrifice her life ?
There is a saying in Korea,” a man gives his life for one who acknowledge him, woman gives her chastity for a man who loves her.

I was told that General had loved her so much.
Her love was stronger than a fear of death.

Below is her shrine.

This is very well done. I think this could have gone under the "steemiteducation" or "education" tag. And love stronger than death is a powerful hook.

Thank you as always

Thats an incredible story !

This got me thinking how love should be maybe.

a man gives his life for one who acknowledge him, woman gives her chastity for a man who loves her.

Your righteous Ghisang, Nongae, reminds me of a Biblical woman who used her beauty and charms to help her people.

Esther, in the Bible, was the Queen of Persia. She concealed herJewish identity from the King, but when he turned on the Jewish people and wanted to destroy them, Esther used her charms to save them.

In a similar way, Nongae used her charms to seduce and murder the Japanese general and avenge her husband's murder and the defeat of the Korean army.

There are strong women figures in Korean history and culture, and once again we see a Geisha who is driven by love to memorialize her lover's memory. Such a heroic act!

The photos of Nongae's monument are beautiful, @slowwalker, as was your telling of the story.

Good work, my friend.

Thank you for story on Esther.

So she literally jumped to her demise with the general in tow to take revenge.

Beautiful lovestory

This story is my favourite so far. I didn't know about geishas in Korean history. Her story is of a great heroine in Korean history. To me, this isn't tragic. It is a story of the grace of women who choose to die for a value greater than life itself.

😊

I have only heard this name geisha so many times for so long... today I gotta learn about her... very informative post...

a man gives his life for one who acknowledge him, woman gives her chastity for a man who loves her. in Chinese “士为知己者死,女为悦己者容”不知道是否恰当?

exactly

slowwalker first I want to thank you for voting my post I feel honoured. Now I must say I have not seen anything this beautiful in a very long time. It is awesome thank you for sharing with us.

good

Women are inferior to men, but women also have a different nature and character from men. As in your story, a woman (geisha) who has a good attitude towards the person she loves, she is willing to do anything for the sake of love. I think women can now learn from it.

Thank you Slowwalker for your story for today.

Oh no
women are not inferior to men anymore,
Even superior to man.
My wife is besides me

I think so too, women are now very strong. they are versatile.
Hahaha

Beautiful story ... women know how to be great ...

Women are real human.

Cool Picture and story thanks you for information
hope to visit it once :) have a great day

Amazing friends and incredibly beautiful place that you visit and I have followed you my greetings from me for you @slowwalker
