Curation Rewards Through Self-Upvoting Going Away?

Did You Know You Even Got Them?

In their last update about HardFork 20 (Velocity) @steemitblog talked about different changes that will occur when Velocity actually drops.

No, the photo doesn't go with the topic. I couldn't find an "I voted for me" image, so I thought maybe someone could use the soothing sight of cute kittens instead.

One of the things mentioned is a change in the way the creator's upvotes aids in curation. Rather than explain it, I'm providing a screenshot of the paragraphs devoted to the change. The first sentence refers to a preceding paragraph which discusses changes to the 30-minute curation window intended to help manual curators against curation bots.

Eliminating self-upvoting.png

I don't self-upvote, so I don't know how significant a change this is going to be for everyone. I suspect, though, like most things here, the true change will come to those who regularly self-upvote as high as they can who have significant voting power.

I'm not a fan of the self-upvote, but I understand why most people, especially those with less voting power, do it. It helps them receive part of their own upvote, plus it gives the post a greater opportunity to be seen.

That doesn't necessarily mean, though, that the creator should also receive all of their own percentage of the curation reward plus a portion of what's left.

What is the reason why people self-upvote? Generally, the first answer you hear is, "I believe this is an important/high quality post and I want people to see it." You will also hear a variation of either, "I'm too small to get fair compensation for this post so I might as well get my portion of the reward pool," or "I can do whatever the bleep I want. It's my reward pool money."

The latter two are probably another post, but If it is actually only meant to entice curation, then the self-upvote should act more asadvertising enticement additional incentive for curators to look at the post and determine if it's worthy of curation.

What do you think? Is it fair? Will it discourage creators from posting? Will it discourage self-upvotes, or temper them? Will it really make that much difference for most of us here?

As a side note, the Velocity update was posted 12-20-17. The opening paragraph states:

Significant progress is being made with hardfork 20, including some additional changes which will make the Steem blockchain even better. There is no official release date yet, but a release candidate is expected to be ready by the end of the year.

It's now the middle of February, so obviously, the release candidate is still being worked on, but based on the projection, the self-upvote change, along with the rest, could be any day.

Authors get paid when people like you upvote their post.

I don't really understand what it means by unused portion.

Like this right?:

  • 0 mins: author = 0%, curators = 0%, returned = 100%
  • 7.5 mins: author = 0%, curators = 50%, returned = 50%
  • 15 mins: author = 0%, curators = 100%, returned = 0%

So, your guess is as good as mine, but if you're talking just the curation portion author's apparently get when self-upvoting, then yes, I think you've got the idea. As far as I understand them, anyway. :)

Yes I mean the curation portion, so that info within the 25% part :)

Seems like a fairly small and insignificant change for the majority of Steemians.

Will it really make that much difference for most of us here?

I don't really think us little guys will notice a big change in our curation rewards.

I do hope it encourages the bigger SP holders to vote more broadly but I'm not holding my breath.

We shall see. I am hoping the hard fork isn't a letdown but I am afraid it may be compared to HF-19.

What do you consider to be the main issues with HF19? I'm only remembering reading positive things about it right now. I can think of one or two things I would say had unintended consequences, but you first, pleeeeeeeassse. :)

Sorry I realized I wasn't very clear. What I meant was HF 20 may be a disappointment compared to HF 19, which was totally awesome!

Ah! Okay. Totally misread that, then. Which is good, since from what I've read so far, HF19 seemed pretty well received. You know my knowledge of what came before now is limited, but just based on what I'm seeing in the update vs. what it's meant to do, is it even possible to be as big as HF19? Anyway, I suppose there's always hope until it's actually here. Then we'll get an idea of what it actually does.

Yeah, I keep the hope. I think it will have some positive effects like increasing our growing numbers at an even higher rate, which should increase the value of the platform and its tokens. Now SMTs on the other hand, could be huge! Like Ethereums ERC-20 tokens. We already have a good amount of development on the Steem blockchain but I think SMTs have potential for really making development take off.

By the end of the year is a long time away. I don't get much in the way of curation bonus anyway, so I don't think it will affect me much. :)

Yeah, I don't think it will affect most of us, mainly the upper minnows (maybe) on up.

As for the end of the year, since it was posted on 12-20-17, and made no mention of 2018, I interpreted "end of the year" to mean end of 2017. At any rate, I've read somewhere else that SMTs are expected by 7-4-18, which I guess would be HF21, so if that's true, it's got to be sooner than later.

I don't know about any of that. I'm too busy trying to make sense of all this stuff. That's what I have you for! Ha ha :)
