The hairy frog is a terrestrial species, but it returns to the water to breathe and to lay its eggs, sheltering under rocks. Adults feed on centipedes, spiders, grasshoppers, etc.
When it senses danger, the hairy frog breaks its own bones to produce claws that pierce the pads of the toes. It is believed that the tip of the leg bone is shaped like a sharp claw, which is connected to a muscle. When the muscle contracts, the claw is pulled down, breaking it from the rest of the bone and coming out from under the pad.
